VooDoo 3 vs G force 2 MX
Ok I am upgrading my daughters pc right now it is a P3 500 with voodoo 3 3000 in it. I want to make it an AMD XP 1600-2100 somwhere in there. I was going to use the Asus A7N266 MB because it has vid and aud built in (cuts costs). My question is is the Video in this card, I believe it is Gforce 2 MX 200 or equivelient, comparable to the VooDoo3 3000 that is in this machine? I know the MX came out after the VooDoo. In short I want to make sure she can still play all the games and things that she plays now with VooDoo.
Thx
Wolf
P.S. any recommendations on other boards with built in audio and video would be nice since I have no ideas on any others.Last edited by Wolfman11511; December 30th, 2002 at 02:01 PM.

My kid has a GF2MX in his machine (32mb flavor) - so far there's not been a game he couldn't play - not the most cutting edge card out there now - but he plays ... Medal of Honor, UT 2003, RTCW etc...
I think the GF is a better card than a Voodoo - but I'm not a video card expert...

the problem isnt performance with the 3dfx v3 3k its the drivers ability to run smoothly with the newer games, etc out now. that card was still a pretty new considering the drivers when they went under, especially the voodoo4(had one myself) &5's.
personally id use the geforce 2mx over the v3 anyday because of this alone...i just wish the whole 3dfx buyout never happened.... worst thing that happened to the gamin market in my opinion.
@ least nvidia is using 3dfx tech in the geforce Fx. should be the best card out for a while when its released.

Thanks for the input. I have noticed quite a few games that don't run well in the VooDoo based machine so maybe this is the way to go.

no problem
youll be happy w/ that mainboard... id heard really good things about it ....plus every asus board iv ever had has been notoriously stable... they do tend to run hotter than most by a few degrees C. Nothing too major though
.
If ya have any questions about somthin... heck gimme a PM jingle or email me.. L8r

Is it a PCI or AGP voodoo 3 3000? If it's pci, us it along with the onboard. Anything that uses glide will run better on the voodoo.

Glide would be the only reason to keep using the Voodoo, but I'd use the onboard video from that motherboard (never thought I'd say that
). nVidia has newer and frequently updated drivers, for one thing.

You can try it, but personally I'ld get a cheaper mainboard and pick up a seperate card. Virtually every onboard vid shares much slower system memory causing a performance hit, and an GF2MX doesn't have much to take that hit, even a cheap radeon 7000 or something to the like will offer better performance and probably be cheaper.

At $75 it's hard to pass up that board. Integrated video, sound and lan. Use the onboard, unless you have a PCI Voodoo; then use it as a secondary

Ok, changed my mind, makes sence in Canada to do it, down there stuff is much cheaper.

My Ge Force 2 Pro massacres Tomb Raider 1. No way will it work. VooDoo no problem.

January 1st, 2003, 09:39 AM #15I concur. Any integrated Video is going to be going to be slower than it's descrete brother due to having to use comparatively slow system ram. I believe the graphics power of this motherboard sit somehwhere between the gf2mx400 and the gf2mx200. That board seems reasonably priced but you could go with a cheaper SDRAM board and get a better graphics card with the money save on the price difference betwixt (SDR) SDRAM and DDR. Depends if you intend to buy new ram or not. Just a thought, may not be practicable in your area, but worth considering.Originally posted by Wizzard~Of~Ozz

the onboard video is decent enough to play rtcw at 1024 x 768 with a glitch, i built a computer with the a7n last year and it was sweet. i hate via and the nforce made it into a nippy little machine . i 3d-marked it and it got about 1900 marks all at default compared to around 2200 with an mx 200 on which they are based. also with that mobo remember to put your ram in pairs as it is dual DDR and will make it a little quicker.

thanks for input. I believe she will be ok with that board she is not a hardcore gamer. I just wanted to be sure it would not be worse than what I have.

I believe that the nForce is using a geforce2MX or mx400 ... look at these numbers for an athlon 1400mhz. The first number is a 3dmark2001se score.
2931 53% NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400
2160 39% NVIDIA nForce
1499 27% NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200
I haven't seen it stated apart from saying that they are a gf2mx type of graphics processor ... but it seems like a gf2mx400 (or something close to it) using onboard system ram to me - rather than its mx200 sibling. Throwing the mx100 and mx200 together like that might bring down the average I guess ...

Dale.

I have Voodoo 3 2000 on 2 computers with the latest 3rd party drivers and they play all the games we have tried. Not that we are serious gamers or anything but the gforce 2mx 400 I had wouldn,t display midtown madness 2 correctly, while these cards with the new drivers do ,one is agp and one is pci.I use ati tv wonder on the agp one as well.It warns that it is not an acceptible card but I watch tv with it no problem so far.
I am the best there was, the best there is, and the best there ever will be. The choice is mine.
