| Ali Chipset and AGP issues
Hello. I am running what I believe is a Soyo K7ADA board and 1Ghz Duron. I have an Inno3D Geforce2 Ti and Windows 2000.
I have heard Ali chipsets have major AGP issues, but have been unable to find much about them on the net, nor the newgroups. My card works flawlessly for 2D applications, although 3D is plagued with graphical errors and the such! I have installed the latest Detonator and AGP drivers, updated windows, and played around with Ali's AGP utility but have had no luck thus far!
Any ideas?

First of all, I love Windows 2000, but it SUCKS for games & pretty much all 3D graphics (but you probably already know that ). W2k provides very bare-bones AGP support, so performance won't be good, even if/when you do manage to get it working; I think you'll find 98SE much more appealing for 3D games & the like. My other suggestion would be to try OmegaDrive's Optimised GeForce drivers, which can be had here. Finally, wait on that next chipset driver revision...

As for 3D graphics, I have a few friends in the industry and they swear by Win2k (NT Kernal), there is no way that a Win9.x OS can compete with the NT kernal when it comes to this.
As for the Omega drivers, I have used these breifly to try them out, they do not improve on performance for gaming but the image quality is slightly better than the Detonators.

What card is it? I ran a board with the Ali Magik chipset for a time. It had issues with AGP adressing and the such, but it didnt effect game play, just TV cards and the such...... Have you gone to alis site and downloaded the latest AGP miniport drivers? |

I have downloaded the latest AGP drivers for the chipset and even experimented with different settings in the included AGP utility. The problems I experience vary from mild graphical distortions to so severe that games are entirely not playable or crash. I rarely have issues when operating in 2D (occationally there are some off-color pixels which follow the mouse courser), however 3D use can just be chaotic! They include screenflicker, strange and irregular polygons appearing over renderings. mis-renderings, and areas without texture among other issues.
My other idea revolves around the card itself. Sometimes I wonder if it might be defective. It had some similar issues in older machines (a P3 running a BX board, and a 600Mhz Duron ViaKT133). Inno3d dismissed this idea, simply saying that the Geforce2 had issues with older boards (BX) as well as VIA. Similarly outside sources echoed this feeling. If so that is not really an issue as I still have a year's warranty and could exchange it with Inno3D. I don't really have the capability to test this, as this is a home machine and I am at school, and even if that weren't an issue (I suppose another member of my family could attempt it), I don't really have any replacement graphics cards to test it with! |
