Hmm, how 'bout a Part # on the back of the case. Should be on the tag. I can't find anything on Gateway's site about that machine. |

yo i recently disabled the integrated grafix accelerator on this thing and installed a radeon 900 pci card and had some similar probs.
you need to consult your device"mangler" as suggested by evil rick
right click on yer integrated grafix card disable it and uninstall the drivers
then pop yer new card in being careul not to let any beads of sweat fall into it's bits then plug yer monitor onto yer new card and reboot ..........and sweat some more...........then if windows does not prompt you with"new hardware wizard" go to the control panel and dubble click add new hardware ...at this point you get the chance to stuff your installation cd that came with your card in your d drive and thevdrivers shoul install automically
reboot and right click on yer desktop then click properties, settings and it should say plug and play (or default) monitor on...........yer grafix card check the box that says "set this device as my primary monitor" and then set yer resolution colours and refresh to suit yer self
If ya don't uninstall the integrated card and drivers first and then switch yer monitor over to the new card the rest won,t work.
best of luck
i wore yellow rubber gloves when in stalling my card.....scary bikkies |

Gateway failed yet again. They initially had me remove my modem (unused) from the slot and put the video card in there. Eureka, it recognized it. However, when windows booted in hung on the Windows 98 screen. No luck. The card is out, I'm back to 4MB and I need suggestions as to what brand you all own. I need a new computer (I can't believe I'm saying this, my computer is a Pent. III 933!).
Would you believe that Gateway tried to sell me another video card that the ASSURED me would work? I said no way. Ps. It was the same brand that I just failed with.
Gateway bites. Beware. Any suggestions? |

If it recognized it, then all is not lost. You could at least try going into 98 in 'Safe Mode'. If you can, then you're pretty much guaranteed it's just a driver problem. When Gateway had you remove the modem, did they have you go through Device Manager, or just pull it out while it was off, then power ON? |

why take your modem out?
new card out is a good place to start. disable the integrated card and install the new one and the drivers. check your device manager .......... if the new card has a yellow marker on it use the troubleshooter to check for conflicts, two sets of grafix drivers vying for the same resources can cause probs. and troubleshooter can guide you through the solution......stick with it!! |

The CD drive isn't even recogized in safe mode. ANy suggestions or should I just bag this? |

You wouldn't install them in Safe Mode, as you said, you can't.
Remove the PCI video card and put the modem back in it's place. Boot into Windows and remove the modem via Device Manager. If there are drivers in Add/Remove Programs, remove them from there as well.
Power OFF and remove the modem and put the video card in it's place.
It should boot into Windows at which time it should be recognized again. You should then be able to install the drivers.
Which PCI slot was the modem in? Was it closest to the CPU?
How many PCI slots does it have?
Posting the part number off the tag would still help greatly. |

Hey, sorry. I was away for a few days. Now back to this...
"Remove the PCI video card and put the modem back in it's place. Boot into Windows and remove the modem via Device Manager. If there are drivers in Add/Remove Programs, remove them from there as well. Power OFF and remove the modem and put the video card in it's place."
Did that... not luck.
Modem was in bottom of the two slots. I am including a picture which shows how the slots look (disregard the card in the picture. That was from before).
What part number off what tag? |
