Monitor not waking on boot

I've built a new system and when I start it up I can hear the system booting to desktop but the monitor will not wake up. If I then hit the reset button the system will reboot and the monitor will wake and everything will work fine. I just can't figure out how to wake it on that first initial startup. I don't think it's the monitor, I get the same effect with the monitor off my second system.

I'm running an asus p4p800 motherboard, radeon 9700pro, 120gig wd harddrive, 1 optical drive, turbolink 350w powersupply.

that's weird, i've started having a similar problem. it's intermittant, so hard to nail down.

I've just rebuilt with an Abit NF7-M, XP2600+, 512MB DDR, and Radeon9600.

I used the Radeon in my old build (Gigabyte 6-VTXE) and didn't have the problem, so it's looking like a combination of vid card and/or mobo - or maybe we both have dodgy cables
