Thread: I'm a Jazz Volunteer!

I'm a Jazz Volunteer!
The local Jazz/Blues station is a listener-supported kinda deal, and they had a big pledge drive (where you wann a listen to music, only they're always honkin'on about "CALL 1-800-***-**** and make your pledge, yada, yada!!!)
But it's a great station, and wishing to help out (and being in an impecunious state lately) I decided to volunteer as a pledge taker at the studio.
Lemme tell ya, it was a BLAST!!
I had to learn the ropes (and the other volunteers were only too happy to help,
) in terms of HOW to take a cash pledge, how to filter the whackos, how to figuire what level of donation gets a "thank you gift", etc., etc. It's pretty intricate, I discovered.
I also discovered I wasn't the only Blues devotee around, as the people there were all music devotees, and when the phones were sorta quiet, we'd share stories and bits of trivia and stuff!
I got to shake hands and chat with the legendary Chuck Niles (the voice of Jazz in SoCal) plus, the local caterers and restaurants contributed by stuffing all of us with some very fine vittles, indeed!
If you guys like Public Radio, but ain't got the scratch to lay serious cash on 'em, you can help out in this fashion! I didn't expect it to be so much fun, though!
Here's a link to the station, if you like Jazz and Blues, they stream audio....Great Station
Enjoy!

Sounds like you had a great time, Todd!

Thanks for sharing your experience...how busy was it? Did you give em' the ol Knothead sweet talk?
...now if I could just get the live audio stream to connect properly.

Hey Todd, sounds like it was a lot of fun. (Especially the good food part)!

Nice one Knot! I have a friend that is a mad blues listener, it's practically the only thing he listens to and he's only 17 like me

Martoch, I got it to play by going directly to live365.com and playing it from there.

I'm not a big jazz fan, but do enjoy the blues... I've included it in live365 favorites
(its free for a lot of broadcasts btw including this one)Helicopters don't fly; they vibrate so much and make so much noise that the earth rejects them.

XPN is the best part of living in the Phila area. Even in S. Jersey, I can still pull it in.Originally posted by surreal

Way to go, Knot, I've always wanted to do that. Our local public radio station plays bluegrass every Sunday morning and I feel like I owe them a pledge for providing such a great forum.

February 18th, 2004, 12:28 PM #13Then stream it Saturday and Sunday, 2:00 to 7:00 (your time, 11 to 4) for their Blues shows...Esp. Sunday, as they have Doug McCloud (a well-known local bluesman) doing the greatest blues show in the world, IMO....enjoy!Originally posted by vass0922

It's funny, but I was surprised at how much it costs to run a fairly simple radio station.
Also, if just HALF of the listening audience would pledge the minimum $40 a year, they'd never have to do these "pledge drives"!
Turns out, they (KKJZ) have to rely on revolving loans, so they're in the red most of the time...
