| Basketball help: Jump shot
Recently i've been playin a lot of basketball, its well suited to my height and speed. Although I can do lay-ups easily now, i've never managed to do a jump shot (i think thats what ya might call it) well. Cos i'm used to playing football i'm used to holding the ball as you would when you're doing a throw in (hands on either side of the ball, about the middle, with thumbs stretching out backwards). I know this isnt correct, but i tried holding it like i've seen good players do, but i can't master it.
Can anyone walk me through this shot step by step (pointing out where hands should be, etc) |

hrmm, never knew it would be this hard to find a link to how to shoot a jump shot, but the one posted basically shows the basics.
the real key is making sure your body is square to the basket(or so i'm told by the countless basketball coaches i've played for).i dont know if there is a real way to show you how to shoot, without physically being there, also each person as there own little way to shoot.like rasheed wallace doesnt use his elbows or arms, he just uses his wrists. i guess the best thing i could say is just practice, practice, practice.
hrmm not a helpful post...sorry..but it does bump the topic to the top |

thanks, m8.
its pretty hard finding a good site. I found one without pics, but a few guidelines, and those pics on that french site were handy too. |

Haha Pshawn, you giving basketball advice now?
Last time I saw you take a jumpshot, it went over the backboard...
Anyway, for the original poster. Just make sure your feet are set evenly apart, with your right foot a little bit ahead of your left foot (other way around if left-handed).
I'm going to be assuming you're right-handed
Hold the ball in the center of your righthand with your fingers spaced out.
Now place your left hand on the side of the ball.
(At this point your left thumb should be the top of a "T" and your right thumb should be the bottom of the "T")
Your left hand is more or less a guide for the ball.
It's hard to explain by typing. The best way to do it is to just play with a couple friends or go to the gym and play a couple pickup games and ask them for some help.
Usually, when you compliment somebody's shot and ask for a few pointers, nobody will refuse you |
