| Muslim girl in Oklahoma can wear head scarf to school
The US is not France: Quote:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A 12-year-old Muslim school girl has won the right to wear a head scarf to her Oklahoma school, in a settlement announced by the Justice Department Wednesday.
Under terms of the agreement, the Muskogee Public School District is required to change its dress code to allow exceptions for religious reasons.
"This settlement reaffirms the principle that public schools cannot require students to check their faith at the schoolhouse door," said R. Alexander Acosta, assistant attorney general for civil rights.

Hear hear!!...can Christian believers prayers be too far off from being reinstated in our schools now?..or will this "separation of church and state" be one sided (again)! |

I think it's everyones fair right to dress the way they want.
Do not take that to the extremes, I don't think it's acceptable for you (meaning the one who would nitpick) to walk around naked or in kkk-suit.
I also think that incoming cultures should accept the majorities culture, and not try to make a law everywhere for their own pleasing (banning of christmas carols at preschool comes to mind...). |

Don't turn this into a 'religion in the schools' argument. No one is stopping kids from wearing shirts and bracelets that say "Jesus Saves" or "WWJD" in high schools, why shouldn't a kid be allowed to wear a head scarf?
Now if she starts cramming her religion down the throats of other students, that's something else entirely. But I can only think of one religion that really does that... |

Not Christianity, JP, just people.
And obviously, it sucks to be a resident of Hamtramck or whatever that place is. Which side of the Constitution does something like that sit on though? |

As this is going in a prayer in school direction... still blows my mind why christians feel so obligated to pray out loud.
Prayer in school is fine by me, pray all you want. Just keep your mouths shut while you do it.
as for the call to prayer issue: Quote: |
Devout Moslems already know when it is time to pray and in this day and age there are certainly other ways to call people for prayers that conforms to noise regulation and respects the wish of the general public not to hear loudspeakers 5 times a day praising a God that is different from theirs and in whose name the terrorists of 9/11 committed their atrocity
| My understanding of that area is that the "general public" there is muslim. Maybe I am wrong, but I am pretty sure they are "concentrated" in those areas. Doesn't make it any more right though.
"praising a God that is different from theirs and in whose name the terrorists of 9/11 committed their atrocity" A laughable statement.

This is for a variety of reasons, mainly because the maturity level is not high enough to wear them. Then of course, you have schools like me where certian shops are not allowed to wear hats, because in that job field you don't. And other schools don't all the previously mentioned, because they dont want to deal with the obvious "Im a [gang 1] so I wear this. You don't, so Im gonna kick your apple. (yes, i said apple)"
It's a standard practice, many companies, retail especially do not allow headwear. There shouldn't be special laws because it is her religion. She came here, and while America may of been founded under that basis, it no longer really should be running uner it.
IMHO, if you can't conform to at least some of our standerards, like language and the current rules, then don't come here. You shuold change to us, not us to you. ( Yes that statement is over generalized, but you get the idea)

... yeah. pretty much. Though im not christian, or religous at all, this country is a white christian country. you goto any other country and they expect you to conform to what they have in place, or deal. they are not going to bend over backwards for you like america does.
yes, we should have alot of leeway, because thats why we are america. but this is getting way out of hand.
