What kind of gas do you buy?
We buy the premium kind for our gas slurping V8 powered Jeep....
we buy gas at the Costco Wholesale gas stations, and there it is much cheaper than at where the rest of you guys go to fill up the tank.

Does the car require 93 octane? If not, you really are wasting your money. I run 87 octane in my Explorer and rani it in my 97 F-150 until the day I sold it. I never had any problems. BTW do a search in Community on "octane" and you will find previous threads relating to your question.

I buy 87 octane at Costco.
I think it's a complete waste of money to go for the higher octane - unless it states in the owners manual that it requires it.

i don't know if the car NEEDS 93 octane, but there is a difference in performance between how the car runs on regular and how it runs on premium. Premium is recomended for the V8 ones according to this site....

Octane refers to timing of combustion. VEEEERRRRYY basically 93 octane combust faster than 87, that being said if an engine is not set up for 93 octane it is wasted. If an engine is set up for 93 octane and you put in 87 it will knock.

July 30th, 2004, 01:34 AM #9The octane number mostly refers to how the gas acts under pressure. Low octane means it combusts at a lower pressure. If you have a high compression engine (sports car) and you use cheap gas, the gas will actually explode without the spark plug even firing; that pre-ignition is what the knocking is.

91 baby. Having a turbo has only a small drawback
Although I would buy 93 if I could....for some reason no gas station in CA has 93. Except maybe a VERY VERY select few. Might as well just buy 100 octane
At least I know a few around me that sells it.
YAH! I knew you'd be jealous

91, usually. It would be a cold day in hell before I ever put anything higher than 87 in a Grand Cherokee, though.

87 here. No way I'm spending more $$$ on my old '88 grand am.
Gas is gas when it comes down to where/what brand you buy. Whether you buy from "Lee's Gas" or 76 it doesnt matter. Most of the crude oil shipped to the U.S. comes from other countries and each company (Chevron, Shell, 76, Mobile, etc.) then refines it to certain specs and ships it to their stations. The only differnece between generic (independant) stations ("Lee's Gas") and other branded stations is that the owner of "Lee's Gas" shops around with different gas suppliers and looks for the cheapest price he can get that day. He could have purchased it from the 76 supplier, Chevron supplier, etc. and comes in an unmarked tanker operated by an independant operator. It's only called generic because that station owner doesnt always carry the same brand of gas all the time so he cannot advertise something that's not always sold there. And I really doubt any gas station owners fill their tanks with water.

Gas stations actually charge different amounts where you live? Around here, all stations charge the same amount given the same octane rating; it's a damn conspiracy.
edit
That conspiracy has a name. It's called collusion.Last edited by ShawnD1; July 30th, 2004 at 05:11 AM.

Maybe they're all friends and have agreed to keep their prices the same. I know of a couple people out in Burbank that do.

I buy 87 octane at Hess.
I haven't verified the facts, but I was told that Hess doesn't get any of their oil from the Middle East. That to me is a good enough reason to give them my business.
