"One day he's (Kerry) saying that we were shooting civilians, cutting off their ears, cutting off their heads, throwing away his medals or his ribbons," Dole said. "The next day he's standing there, 'I want to be president because I'm a Vietnam veteran.' Maybe he should apologize to all the other 2.5 million veterans who served. He wasn't the only one in Vietnam," said Dole, whose World War II wounds left him without the use of his right arm.

Obviously they're a 527 have as much right to run whatever ads they want. HOWEVER, the ads are patently unfair, possibly even slanderous, and the president should encourage the group to pull them off the air. But after having done that, there's nothing anyone can do about these ads, certainly not the FEC. |

So now even Bob Dole stoops to quoting Kerry so blatantly out-of-context that it's shameful. For those still in the dark, Kerry was reporting what he had been told by many Viet Nam veterans, and his testimony at the time clearly indicated this. So "shoot the messenger" if you wish, but be honest about what you're doing, at least! |

But the President can't tell them what to do, that was part of the McCain-Feingold bill that he should never have signed into law. But now it's the law. And he shouldn't say anything about the ads unless Kerry releases his records to prove the charges wrong. Anything he says will be turned around by the press. He's not going to endorse them because he shouldn't; he's not involved with them. So the press will take any comments as "Even the President says the ads should be pulled." All Kerry has to do is release his records to show that he is being slandered. Of course he won't even release his attendance records at the Senate Intelligence hearings because those will only further damn him. |

The idea that Bush publically denouncing the ads will violate McCain-Feingold is just flat out wrong. |

He can say whatever he wants, but he has no authority to force them to do anything. That's what I'm trying to say. |

Has either candidate denounced any 527 group other than the oppositions before today? |

Bush can denounce whoever he wants. Kerry denounced the Moveon ads challenging Bush's Nat'l Guard service. Bush refuses to denounce these guys. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0818-03.htm
Moreover, it wasn't 'one day' Kerry said this and the next he said something else. I know senior citizens have better long term memory than short term but Bob Dole should know the difference between one day and 32 years.

Everyone knows perfectly well where the vast majority of 527 money goes, so let's be real careful about who should be denouncing what.
In any event, Candidate Kerry has given the Swift Boat vets far more advertising than they could afford themselves. I'm sure they'll thank him later. |
