I know many people here are part of the older, working population, so I figured it would be a good question to ask you all.
The question pertains to the subject of careers, and outlooks of each particular career field.
I am just curious as to which jobs are growing, and in turn, which jobs are shrinking in our American society.
Of course, this intrigue is not without reason. I am looking into colleges, and I want a job in a somewhat small, but growing career field.
Piloting, I know has significantly declined since 9-11, and most likely will still continue its downward spiral as I complete college.
I was also interested in technology fields. I know a few years ago, the industry was booming, but from what I can see, techs have become like laywers and doctors - there are just so many these days. The demand for them is high, but so is the quantity.
I'd be greatly appreciative of any insight to potentially growing career fields.
Thank you. |

While looking at career prospects there is one thing you should keep in mind. Pilots for instance, there will be pilots for the foreseeable future, but there may not be as many. Because pilot skills are pretty hard to attain, they earn high salaries. If you are a great pilot, you will have a job. Be flexible, I know some folks that getting a job at the factory would set them for life, we know differently now and one must be able to expand their horizons and go into other fields as the market dictates. Just my two cents.

we always need ditchdiggers.
Well, There are certain jobs that are always in demand. Doctors, nurses, teachers...but none of those really fit what your lookin for. But remember, if your one of the best at what you do, you can always find a job. Excellence allows for flexibility. |

You can always go into a field that always has a need. And I agree with being the best at what you do. I strived to be the best in my field, which guarentees me work year 'round when others are put on unemployment.
It's a hard thing to do though...finding what you want to do for a living. But, the best thing to do is to try a few different fields now so you can find out what you DON'T want to do for a living.
For all you know, you may end up loving laying asphalt for a living. |

Residential and Commercial Gas Fitters are, and will be in demand for quite a few years to come. Good income as well.
Cheers! |

Air Traffic Control is one field that is going to have alot of openings in the next few years. After the strike in the 80's and all the firings that followed that strike they had to hire alot of people. Those that were hired are comming up on retirement age. About half of the US air traffic controllers are expected to retire by 2007. Good time to get in on it. |

Not to mention, they did strike for a reason. (didnt' they almost strike a few years ago?)
Can't strike in a position like that no matter how upset you are.

First, you want a job that requires your presence. Any job that can be telecommuted can be shipped overseas. Any job that doesn't require you to be face to face with the client can be shipped overseas. Engineering jobs are being shipped overseas. Remember, the guy who designed the Golden Gate Bridge never set foot in San Francisco nor ever saw the bridge!
The other part is that you want to be your own employer.

| Thats the one thing keeping me from picking my colleges. Love to do technology work, exspecially networking, but its really a side job career and all. Might try Technology Education, in a double major.
