AOL kills Nullsoft, Winamp
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11...axes_nullsoft/
Having originally forced Nullsoft to release the horribly unfinished Winamp 3 on us, it now seems AOL have finally put the boot in just when Nullsoft were making a comeback with Winamp 5.
Gits.
RIP to the best media player around.

lol check out the skins for quintessential, there is also one that looks like winamp
quintessential has a lot of nice features, uses only 10 MB ram (donnu what winamp uses but the last time i used it it was up to 20 or more) you can bind actions to buttons, even when it runs somewhere in the background, mp3/OGG converter, CDDB, etc. check it out it's worth, and it never crashed <- the only thing missing is a library function, but check out the plug ins there is one that works quite good
quinte is way better than winamp...

... yet another reason to hate AOL

Noooo...
I hated Winamp 3, and switched to Windows Media Player.
Then I found 5 and fell in love.
I sincerely hope someone picks it up and doesn't muss it up.

I hope that sticks around, but I doubt it.

Hey, the Nullsoft people are still there (AOL didn't whack em', right?), so they'll be back....they'll be back.

The Winamp and Shoutcast sites/software/services will remain open and available for public download. AOL is simply eliminating the core Nullsoft staff. Not to sound mean, but there is not much more Nullsoft can do at this point to "revolutionize" simple MP3 playback software.
Big deal core development has been suspended. Minor bugfixes will still be addressed, and that is all I care about at this time. The Nullsoft core development crew already made their fortune in 1999, and I am honestly surprised AOL kept them on staff for another five years.
To recap, Winamp is far from dead. It will be maintained and new plugins will continue to be developed. The primary application and user interface are stable enough for commercial distribution, so does it really matter if the core code is being placed in maintenance mode?
