| Massive tidalwave kills over 7,000 in Southeast Asia fox
"AKARTA, Indonesia — The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across southern and southeast Asia on Sunday, killing more than 7,000 people in six countries.
"Tourists, fishermen, homes and cars were swept away by walls of water up to 20 feet high that swept across the Bay of Bengal (search), unleashed by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake centered off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra (search)." |

Now I know everyone is very busy discussing important issues that are vital to their very survival, like songs in commecials or colors of xmas or even aftermilk...but this is the biggest earthquake story in over 40 years. You guys might want to wake up and pay attention. Just a suggestion, not a commandment or anything. [shrug] |

Give me a break. I just woke up 20 minutes ago! I was looking through the forum index, thinking, "Tell me there's already a thread on this."
Wild, wild stuff. Apparently there were even quite a few beachgoers who were out and about when it happened.
7,000 dead. That's insanity.
CNN says that it's the fifth largest quake in recorded history.

They're now reporting over 10,000 dead and millions homeless.
And yes, 8.9 magnitude is about 6,000 times what we experienced in the Northridge quake.
That is truely massive. |

We recieved a tsunami watch in the weather office when I was in Japan. There was a large quake in the south Pacific, and the watch was for possible resultant tsunamis. Thinking there might be a massive wall of water heading at you (about 1/2 mile from the coast) is a really unnerving feeling!
It's some scary stuff. |
