"The system could also track how often you drive during rush hour and charge higher fees to discourage peak use"
Yes so people should stay at work later until the roads clear up. What the heck is this crap? But what will they do about the older cars that dont/wont have these devices?
Next thing im gonna have a tax just to exhale carbon dioxide. |

Okay, as much as I hate traffic around here in the Bay Area, that doesn't mean I want some silly tax that is supposed to help "break the bottleneck on California's freeways." |

| Umm SORRY
Don't charge me those fees for being on at peak hours
Charge my place of business
I dont have an option of my hours so why should I get charged for being on during heavy commuter hours?
Business won't like that idea, get them into it and this will get shot down real quick. |

The proposal would be a logistical nightmare. Such a program would involve so many state and federal agencies that it would be doomed to failure well before it ever got off the ground, not to mention consumer and political groups would sue over privacy rights if the government mandated all cars be outfitted with the proposed GPS tracking device.

I am waiting for the District and Maryland to hear this idea. They are already considering a $750 luxury tax on SUV's and Virginia is considering raising tolls on the Dulles Toll Road to pay for a new Metro line from West Falls Church to Dulles. In the mean time Metro has record patronage even with a price increase last summer, it would stand to reason that Metro could raise fares to become solvent. :shakeshead:

I referred to this proposal in another thread about Big Brotherism. The next logical use of this would be to send you speeding tickets in the mail after they tracked you driving above the limit on the rare open stretch of highway. This law is probably being pushed by owners of gas guzzlers. Joe Hummer would pay the same tax as Jane Prius, regardless of the fact that Joe is polluting the air more and using more fuel.
But like RR says, this law would be a major headache to implement. And even before it got to the logistics stage, it would be tied up in lawsuits for years. |

M_six they are already passing out tickets by setting up cameras in the trees.
Cameras takes pics of your lisence and sends you a nice ticket. They have stuff you can buy online that supposedly blocks the camera from taking picture. Its some sort of clear film. Heard it worked. |

They've used cameras in Europe for years. I got nailed by one once. I remember a picture in the paper of a guy who had seen a camera being set up and then went home, used tape to make his license plate say something rude, put on a Mickey Mouse mask, and drove at high speed past the camera flipping the bird. It was pretty funny looking. |
