All the cars in my household have traction+stability control. I personally like having the electronic nannies around IF I have the option to turn them off. (which thankfully I do). Traction control alone isn't terribly exciting, but when combined with stability control, it's ability to keep a car going straight when it otherwise wouldn't is pretty impressive.

Tires would be my guess. Having the right tire for the conditions makes a HUGE difference. If I was in the snow, I would rather have a RWD vehicle with snow tires than an AWD vehicle with all-seasons.
EDIT: That was a pretty cool video though.

If you have the option to disable traction control, there is a good chance it is not fully disabled. Some systems just increase the thresholds before engaging when supposedly "disabled."
I have TC on the Maxx. It seems to work fine for daily driving. I haven't found much reason to disable it other than roasting the front tires off the line, which is kind of pointless assuming you typically want to move forward instead of leaving rubber and smoke when at the line.

Yeah, I know and that's how it is on a couple of our cars, luckily the threshold is high enough that you can still get pretty stupid before the electronics kick in and kill it. On my IS, pressing the button only disables it up to 30 mph then it turns itself back on, but with the help of some forums, I have found a way to completely disable it by putting the car in a "diagnostics mode" which basically involves a certain combination of brake and ebrake engagements. Mine's an 06, on the 07's the button completely disables traction/stability control.
