I will have to admit that the 5 cylinder sound has a good sound to it. I liked the 5 banger in my brothers Volvo. It has enough of a gritty sound to it, but sounds more refined than an 6 or 4 cylinder. |

Yup, that I-5 sounded a lot better than I anticipated.
Is it just me, or do all inline motors have a distinct sound in comparison to V motors?

An I5 is more naturally balanced than an I4, thus the different sound.

Correct me if i'm wrong here aswell, but isn't the I6 the most finely balanced of common motors? |

Longer crankshaft means smoother running engine..less vibration...which is why a VW beetle's opposed 4 sounds different than an inline 4, and the Subaru's horizontally opposed 4 sounds similar, but different due to the presence of a water jacket.
Also, the difference in sound comes from a different timing on the exhaust pulses.
I always wondered if you changed the length of the pipes on a 4 banger so that the exhaust pulse was in the same tempo as a V8 if it would make a difference in noise quality. Most likely not. |

An I6 is the least cylinder engine with both primary and secondary balance.
Even better, a V12 is even more refined if you want an extremely smooth running engine. It is essentially a twin I6, but it is loading the crankshaft at twice as many times per revolution. |

An I4 has primary balance but lacks secondary balance, which is the reason many performance I4 engines like the Mitsu 4G63 have balance shafts.
Some enthusiasts eliminate the balance shafts, install poly engine mounts, then wonder why their econosport feels like it is going to shake apart. Going further, toss in set of 272 cams in a 4G63, and you can get a near V8 feel and sound at idle. |

Thinking a little more modern, the Jaguar XK-E typifies the classic V12 sports car IMO. |

Unless of course it's for something ridiculous like saving weight. Maybe it allows the engine to rev faster due to one less moving part? I'm probably wayyyy off |
