Removing the balance shaft system does remove weight, but it is more about removing weight off the rotating assembly than removing weight off the car.
The mod is usually good for a few horsepower, but the trade off is increased engine shaking at idle. It could also incur increased bearing wear depending on how well balanced the engine is. Luckily the 6-bolt 4G63 is built to rather good tolerances from the factory.

BTW, among the DSM community, there is also a reliability issue. The balance shaft belt turns at twice the rare of the timing belt, meaning up to ~14,000RPM on even a factory stock DSM. If the balance shaft belt breaks, it can bounce into the timing belt assembly, potentially causing massive problems for a DOHC interference engine like the 4G63. |

Skimming another site, noticed an Eagle Talon TSi AWD with a trailer hitch. Come on people, it was an econosport built to run with much more expensive sports cars, not to tow loads.
That is about as bad as a Firebird or Mustang with a trailer hitch.
Serious, what are these people with sports cars actually towing? Preferably nothing, but at most, I hope it is not much more than something like a small jet ski. |

Firebirds, camaros and mustangs with tow hitches? I can safely say I've seen way more than my fair share of them around here.

Plenty to be seen. Ever seen them actually towing a load, though? Hmmm. |

I've seen an s2000 towing a boat! Can't imagine the clutch lasted very long.

I'm more amazed that the s2000 had enough torque to get itself rolling with a boat behind it |

The guy said he towed his ski boat, and another larger boat for for two and a half years using his S2K. He's a member of car forum I frequent and even posted pictures. It did look pretty funny seeing an S2K towing a boat though. |

Just the other day, I saw a Mercedes benz pulling a 17 ft fiberglass ski boat down the highway
So much for being able to say you don't drive cars without trailer hitches!
The most ridiculous thing I've ever seen was a Geo Metro with a trailer hitch pulling a boat.
You can pretty much pull anything you want to with anything you want to, but it doesn't mean it'll be safe! |
