Next stop. Time to use some "Cool Tape" on my intake tubing. It get's extremely hot with the exhaust manifold right underneath so hopefully the tape will keep some of the heat off. I'm also going to use some exhaust repair aluminum to mock up a better intake flow for my cut out airbox so it draws in more direct cold air.

Cool tape on the intake tube. I'm obviously not going to notice any power difference on the butt dyno, but hopefully it will do it's job and keep the air intake temps down. I'm mainly doing it to slow-down and prevent heatsoak which thus far from a 30-min drive, it seems to be doing rather well.

| Rare 1937 Bugatti supercar found in English garage; could fetch millions at Paris auction Quote:
Relatives of Dr. Harold Carr found an extremely rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante — a Holy Grail for car collectors — as they were going through his belongings after his death.
The dusty two-seater, unused since 1960, didn't look like much in the garage in Gosforth, near Newcastle in northern England.
But only 17 were ever made, and when it's cleaned up and auctioned in Paris next month, experts believe it will fetch at least 3 million pounds ($4.3 million) and possibly much more.

Took a closer look at the rear muffler on the BMW. The actual inner muffler looks good and in tact. It is just a little deterioration on the outer shell, which is more or less there for visual decoration. I cleaned the spot and filled it with a high temp epoxy filler. The filler is even about the same color as the shell, so I am not in too much of a hurry to sand and paint it.

Power shifting makes my RX8 ge to 60 real quick.
However, it probably makes my clutch and trannys EOL come quicker as well

Back when I had the '87 Comanche, I practically killed the crappy Peugeot BA/10 5-speed in about a week of mild abuse.
A bunch of clutch drops, and tons of power shifting. The tranny was whining real bad...and to be honest I'm surprised it lasted that long with 180k on the clock. The Peugeot BA/10's are known as really bad light duty transmission...it was a horrible decision on AMC to put it behind the 4.0L.

Update on the Jeep.
Front seal and oil filter adapter were replaced along with the leaking heater core. Good news? I don't have to worry about them. Bad news? My rear main seal (which I assumed was the main oil leak) has actually gotten a lot worse and is still causing oil to spray onto the downpipe.
Considering I'm strapped for cash I was going to have an exhaust shop do a custom job and straight pipe it further back then across to meet the muffler much further back so the oil wouldn't be drip as directly on it. However, considering the cost of a custom job being probably $150-$300 and the fact that I'd still have a mild oil leak, I figured it would be a temporary fix that was truly a waste of money.
Oh and I believe the whole "chopping air noise" is most definitely my exhaust manifold instead of the cat. Today it sounded almost like a helicopter going down the highway, and it was especially noticeable when passing cars side by side. Plus, when I shut it down after about an hour of driving it hissed for about 2 seconds.
I'm looking into a Pacesetter Header as a replacement since Borla A) decided to discontinue headers for my 87-90 "Renix" 4.0 and B) was ridiculously expensive.
The only downside is pacesetter has mixed reviews...some saying cracks in under 20k miles. However, I've had it since what, 05 and Ive put only 10k on it so I figured if it does go out that soon, it won't as big a deal. In the mean time it's better flowing, especially over a stock exhaust manifold. |

Some of the DSM guys complain about PaceSetter headers cracking on the 4G63 after awhile. As you have noted, though, the price is the trade-off. PaceSetter is one of the most affordable header brands on the market.
About the leak, there are additives for swelling main seals. However, it is a huge gamble, as some claim such additives are actually bad for the other seals, like causing even more leaks after changing oil. Note, I have never used a dedicated mail seal additive, so certainly don't take my info as advice to actually use the stuff. Research and make you own decision on it. YMMV, literally. |
