We have 2-3$ a gallon fuel for MAYBE another year/year and a half..... then its gonna get ugly again.
Hopefully, by that time, the economy will have settled a bit- and technology for hydrogen fuel systems or battery cells will be far better and actually affordable to the common American...

Expect hydrogen-powered passenger cars more like around the 2020 to 2025 time frame. It is not for the lack of being able to produce them, but instead for a lack of a viable fuel distribution network.
Then again, even if fuel is available, look at what is happening to alternative fuel vehicles like the Civic GX. IIRC, I have heard rumors that Honda is thinking about dropping it. Honda Civic GX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hybrid is the industry buzzword, which is depressing considering the cost and environmental impact of the batteries involved. Manufacturers like Toyota could just as easily replace the drivetrain of the Prius with a direct injection I4 and probably turn even better MPG than the hybrid model.
I am reminded of a local shop building a Honda Insight with a K20a swap. 200HP I4 and six-speed trans in a lightweight aluminum car with an extremely aerodynamic body. Reportedly delivered ~48MPG for highway cruising, yet delivered a horsepower to weight potential more like that of a Lotus sports car. K20a INSIGHT by LHT - Tampa Racing

On the topic of MPG ...
With the line of thinking that gas is going to go up, also having just paid off my civic, I have started to think about what i can do to improve gas mileage. Although i would love to get a new car, I just dont see it happening as the MPG from my current civic ~26-28 depending on the city/highway usage isnt worthwhile to sink another 20k to get ~30-32. Anyone have any suggestions on what if anything i can improve from a stock 2000 Civic EX to get some better fuel economy? |
