No matter what you do, it's still an overgrown crackerjack box.

So the 4.0L's bottom end is being rebuilt.....apparently the oil pump was slowly giving out and I ran it quite a while like that without realizing. Switching to 10w-40 pushed it over the edge though.....
Fun times.

Not so fun times there. How much actual damage? Is the shop giving the top-end a quick glance, too? Might be a good time to check common wear items like valve seals while the engine is apart. |

The funny thing is, the engine made excellent power still and ran ok, just a lot of mechanical "noise" (knocking, clunking, etc) when I brought it in, and it got louder as it warmed up.
The good news is that the rair main seal will now be fixed too, so that saves on the labor aspect if I had did that separately.
I had the option of a 93' junkyard motor w/ unknown mileage but I decided to opt for my '88. It's actually quite a bit of a stronger block and it's been nothing but reliable (doesn't even consume a noticeable amount of oil!) . As I must confess, I am extremely far from easy on the motor. |

Just filled up today for the first time in 2 and a half weeks. I am getting over 400 miles before my low fuel light comes on and the last tank averaged 26mpg. This car has been sucking down nothing but 93 Octane Shell V-Power since I drove it off the lot.
I planned on taking pictures, but I am too lazy and all I have is my camera phone. Its got a bunch of bug guts on the front of it right now.
