How do I go about getting a copy of my police record?
A long (I am NOT getting this old) time ago I was young and stupid. And drunk. And now I am wondering if any of those wonderfully brainless moments of my life are still on record. But I have never had to do anything like this before.
When I worked for ______ corp I would just send in the form for new hires and get the report back. But to get one on your own...
Thank you for any help you can provide. |

Under the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT, you can go down to your local police station and ask for a copy. They are allowed to charge you a "reasonable" copy fee per page. By Constitutional law you cannot be denied any access to any information any government agency has on you. The only info a GOV agency can deny you has to be Classified or part of an on going investigation. |

Most states expunge records when you turn 18. Were your indescretions as a minor? |

Toadman: That's part of the problem. I can't remember...
I crawled out of the bottle in my mid twenties, and I know I got in trouble a couple (or more) times before then. But what for exactly, and when I can't remember. Honestly.
Warning to the young: Do not start. Wait until you have a stable life under your feet. Then, if you feel like having a drunken night out that's all it will be. One night. Not ten years of your life. |

Funny thing is it takes (in most states) a juvy judge to issue a warrant to see juvy records (does not matter if your 60 now).
Forgot to add that no gov agency EVER erases information. Expunged means never to be released.

Correct but expunged(or "sealed") records cannot be used in 3-strike cases except for felonies, i.e. a convicted sex offender under 18 is a convicted sex offender forever. |

I tell people when their job requires them to have security clearance to tell the interviewing officer nothing but the truth....be absolutely honest....ALL records ever will be found by the FBI, during my clearance investigation I was suprised by my 3rd grade teachers comments...I always had thought she disliked me...nice thing I found out was she thought very nicely of me.
When the Freedom Of Info act came out I applied for ALL of my government records. Before that you could not see any part of your own clearance investigation.
