Kids were heroes in pit bull attack

"The loyal friendship between 10-year-olds Nick Foley and Jourdan Lamarre turned them into heroes as they each tried to save the other during a savage attack by three rampaging pit bulls.

The attacks left six wounded in the stunned Cary-area neighborhood before the animals were fatally shot by officers.

The dogs charged sheriff's officials when they arrived on the scene and had to be shot.

They pulled the dogs off of Harold Foley, and saw Sword lying on top of Nick, "protecting him so the dogs wouldn't bite the boy anymore,'' Gerdes said.

"The dogs even turned on the owner,'' and Sword was in danger of losing his thumb, Nygren said."

I remember as a kid watching a kids show, where they had a trained 'friendly' pit bull being put through his acts of obedience by his trainer. This was a show dog well trained, and a spokes dog for the pit bull owners club. For some reason it flipped out and attacked it's owner live on tv. They can be loving, good dogs BUT they can also lose it for no reason and should not be able to reach the general population at any time IMO.
PS I'm pretty sure it was Gary not Cary as the paper said

Agreed. I'm an avid dog lover and I support all kinds of animal related charities but I see no reason for pitbulls.

I know they can be good dogs, when they are trained properly. But they seem to have a very short trigger which could set them off over nearly anything, no matter how well trained they are.
