Motive unclear in 'inhuman' attack on pair

"A West Chicago husband and wife who drove almost every day to the back of their apartment complex to feed birds gathered there were severely beaten by another resident who, inexplicably, attacked them as they parked their pickup truck, police said.

Mireille Ellberg, 71, was critically injured early Sunday when she was punched, kicked and then run over with the couple's own vehicle, police and prosecutors said Monday.

Her 65-year-old husband, James, was punched and kicked repeatedly, then beaten again as he tried to aid his injured wife, authorities said.

The West Chicago man charged in the attacks, 21-year-old David Martinez Villareal, was arrested within five minutes -- still at the Main Park Apartments where both he and the victims lived. But authorities on Monday couldn't say what triggered a sudden, vicious attack that DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett described as "bizarre, inhuman behavior.

While authorities couldn't offer a possible motive for the attack, a roommate said Villareal had suffered from some type of mental illness. Answering the door at Villareal's apartment, the roommate -- speaking in Spanish through a translator -- said Villareal had been hospitalized previously at the Elgin Mental Health Center, although he couldn't say how recently that had occurred."

I have been listening to the discussions on local radio stations. One issue that has be brought up is that the attacker is a illegal allien.

Oh, yeah, of course. Crazy violent people are always illegal immigrants, aren't they?

Do you condone this act, due to the nature of the offender?

well says alot about the wonderful science of mental health, "Yeah he is fine let him out of Elgin Mental Health center... he is safe for his return to society"

The illegal alien thing, is bad because we supplied him with mental health care and released him in our society. That is horrible, spend my tax dollars on an illegal alien and release a dangersous person (who should not fricking be here) into my community to mame innocent people.

How cute!!!

Is it so dangerous in our world today that a peaceful elderly couple can't feed some birds without getting the living daylights beaten out of them? This is utterly horrifying! That man deserves nothing less than to be jailed for a 20 years; I don't care how crazy he is.

Side note. Insane people killed you in the year 10,000 BC, 500 BC, 1920AD and in 21st century and in all likelyhood into the future.

when you get right down to it, you are no less safe today then in the 20's other than increased population density.

Wha?! I don't get it. Are you saying we've always been prone to random acts of violence?

I'm just pointing out that the talk-radio loonies are losing track of the fact that we could deport every illegal alien, mad or sane, and still have a sufficiency of our own home-grown homicidal maniacs. The immigration status of the suspect is, to use a technical term, a red herring.

Chicago, where this story comes from, had its own native John Wayne Gacy.

Absolutely! there has always been a jack the ripper.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/020712.html this article sort of splits the difference. Long and short of it is that of the threats you face in life random violence ranks just below drowning in your bathtub and lightning strikes. Unless you live in a hotspot (where socioeconomic problems are rampant) then it rises all the way up to tripping on stairs.

You need worry more about your tire pressure and remaining brake pad life then being killed by a mugger in 99% of the land mass of the US.
