We think they are funny, but some people,,,
Can you believe this? This guy was a county treasurer, I swear I've never seen so many thieves and morons in one state in my life.
I think my patience and tolerance is right out the window.. I gotta get out of this place! Former Alcona County treasurer may spend life in jailMan accused of embezzling $1.2 million from county
Jeff Piechowski and Kristen Abraham
ALCONA COUNTY (WJRT) - (02/28/07)-- The former treasurer of Alcona County could spend the rest of his life in prison. Wednesday a judge decided that Thomas Katona will stand trail on 11 felony counts.
The Harrisville man is accused of embezzling over $1.2 million from the county -- all of which was sent overseas as part of an e-mail scam.
Originally Katona was facing nine felony charges. The attorney general's office amended that at Wednesday's preliminary exam, adding two more.
The attorney general's office says Katona embezzled that money throughout the year last year and all of it went to accounts in Taiwan and Nigeria.
They say the people who received those wire transfers were closely linked to a Nigerian e-mail scheme in which victims are asked to pay money in advance to cover taxes, insurance and legal fees.
In return, they are supposed to eventually receive large sums of money. According to testimony, Katona originally invested thousands of dollars of his own money to the scheme, but when the people in Nigeria kept asking for more and more money, he then began to tap into county money.
Two key witnesses were the deputy treasurer and bookkeeper for the county, who noticed large debits and wire transfers out of the county's account as well as up to 10 calls a day from Nigeria.
Katona stood mute so the judge entered a not-guilty plea. Katona's attorney waived their right to Wednesday's hearing and brought none of his own witnesses.
He also did not question many of the witnesses and said the state has a very strong case.
