| Free speech at Columbia University?
"When protesters stormed a Columbia University stage on Wednesday evening, shutting down a speech by the head of a fiercely anti-immigration group, they not only stopped the program, but also hurtled the university back into the debate over free speech on campus.
The fracas, which came just weeks after the president of Iran was invited to speak at Columbia and then told not to come, was captured live by Columbia’s student-run television station, CTV, as well as by two commercial stations. It was shown repeatedly on television in New York yesterday and was widely available on the Internet.
Yesterday Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg chastised Columbia for the disruption. “I think it’s an outrage that somebody that was invited to speak didn’t get a chance to speak,” he said in response to a question on his weekly radio program.
The program was sponsored by the Columbia University College Republicans, a five-year-old group that says on its Web site that it has 600 members. Its president, Chris Kulawik, a junior, is described on the site as a “staunch conservative” who “endeavors to attain the cherished title of ‘Most Despised Person on Campus.’ ”
He said he was “very much surprised” by Wednesday night’s events.
“We always understood that this is a very left-wing campus,” he said. “But to see your peers resort to physical violence because they disagree with you is very frightening.
“At Columbia University free speech took quite the hit,” it said. “At an event hosted by the college Republicans at Columbia we were reminded that the left advocates free speech only for those who regurgitate the same tripe that they spew.” http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/07/ny...r=1&oref=login http://www.minutemanproject.com/defa...?contentID=191

A similar thing happened at the Barbara Streisand concert. They guy basically said "enough" on an anti Bush skit, and she jumped him.
Fine, she has that right it's her show, but now it's national news about the evil conservative speaking to the queen of liberalism!
Liberals do not allow free speech they do not approve of.

Creatures | How do you figure? The lefties and the illegal aliens are the ones who wouldn't let him speak. They were spewing racial insults at the black members even.
Shows again how the colleges are indoctrinating liberalism and intolerance in todays youth. The only thing I can think is the professors are 'stickin it to the man' in their form of indoctrination revenge. Why? Easy, professors usually do not have the ability to hold regular jobs like the productive members of society and they take that personally.
God help the future leaders of the USA.

If they can't win the arguement, then they'll start a fight or name calling contest. It's the same here in San Diego. I work for a local community college district here and we see the same insanity.
There is an elitist, "We are smarter than you", attitude with several of the groups on campus and also alot of the Staff and professors. My co-workers and I get a real kick out of these spoiled, clueless, pampered brats. I know I shouldn't call names either, but a spade is a spade.
These folks rant and rave and protest and name call and condesend to anyone who does not subscribe to their ideology. And they actively lobby and work to silence their opponents and their opinions, all the while they spew their vitriolic and inflamatory attacks and rhetoric at anyone who would propose an alternative view. I personnally have even been on the receiving end of it in class myself. It's quite entertaining listening to someone who would attempt to debase my ideas and opinions and experiences and also watch them try to silence me under the guise of debate and also, in the same breath try to convince me and others that they are practising "Free Speech". I just love the highly educated. |

Isn't Liberalism an ideology of tolerance and understanding? |

| That's good because it appears he's not helping the ones now.

This is why (as I explained in a different thread) I don't view myself as one of the so-called "activist" left. I don't like people who attempt to stifle open debate.
But look at how broad the paint is being flung here. "Liberals do not allow free speech they do not approve of." And "Shows again how the colleges are indoctrinating liberalism and intolerance in todays youth."
Come again???
"The liberals" and "the colleges" did not do this! Nor did "The Left." A small group of students did, and even that is in dispute, as one person is quoted as saying she just tried to hoist a banner. But I deplore hecklers who continually disrupt speakers and essentially shut down events. |
