It seems that the "pet food " poisoning may have been deliberate, that manufacturers had added "melamine" which is a industrial chemical that can skew results of tests making the food seem more protein rich than it actually is.

Imported ingredients used in recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their apparent protein content, federal officials said Thursday.

That‘s one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods.

The American Hog Farm, a 1500-animal facility in Ceres, Ca., has been quarantined by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and lab testing has revealed the presence of the chemical melamine in pig urine. Additional testing of tissues, serum and urine from animals at the farm is underway at the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory at UC Davis to determine if melamine is present in meat.

We import so many food additives and food ingredients from China they could poison us any time they want.

90% of our BHT, a food preservative comes from China. The Melamine was thought to have been used to "spoof" the testing for human consumption. Humans aren't affected by melamine in the amounts we're talking about.

Believe me, where our food supply is concerned we live on prayers. Cheating and thieving are like a religion in China. But when they are caught, they will probably become kidney, heart, and liver donors.
