Going to the mediterranean - advice appreciated!

Well, my wife is off to take the Bar exam this weekend, and upon her return we are leaving for our belated honeymoon. We are going on a cruise in the Mediterranean, with stops in the following places:

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
Mykonos, Greece
Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey
Rhodes, Greece
Limassol, Cyprus
Alexandria, Egypt
Piraeus (Athens), Greece
Naples, Capri, Italy

Both of us are very well travelled but we have never been to this area and we are very excited I was looking through some excursion info and saw some interesting things like, we are required to have a police escort through Cairo and shorts are deemed "unacceptable" clothing for Egypt.

I was just curious if anyone had any other tips or advice while in these areas that we should know about. If I can figure out how to use this digital camera we got ( I am not what you would call an early adopter to technology) I will post some pictures from the places we travel.

edit - Cruise line is Royal Caribbean - any info on them?

That sounds like a great time, here is a short list of recommendations based on my travel experience:
In Rome: find a gellato shop in the the part of the city they call "the old city", Rome has some of the best ice cream I have ever had, and ice cream is a great way to enjoy a city as beautiful as Rome.
In Greece: I have heard that Greece has really nice scuba diving, maybe something fun to do for a day. I see that you are staying in Rhodes, that city holds one of the earliest schools of study, it was a prestigious area of studying in ancient times. So I'm am sure there will be some awesome ruins to see.
In general: I would just say try and appreciate being in that particular region of the world, what an immense impact the mediteranean has had on Western and world history.

My travel is limited to mostly state side with some stints to Canada and Mexico so I don't have any advice. Just wanted to say have fun, be safe and be sure to post back with a lot of pictures when you get back!

Looks like a wonderful trip

From your list, I've only visited Rome and Ephesus.

Ephesus has some relatively well preserved Roman buildings, of which the Celsius library is the most impressive.

In Rome, if you decide to visit the Colloseum, and the queues are long, go to the Roman Forum (about 500 yards further), and purchase a combined ticket Roman Forum/Colloseum there. You will be able to jump the queue at the Colloseum and the Roman Forum is worth a visit anyway.

Naples might be a bit smelly.

Take lots of light, loose fitting clothes made from natural fibres: it can get very hot 80-100F+ in the Med at the height of summer, and if you are sightseeing or on an organised tour, you may not have the option to chill out in the shade for a couple of hours. A hat would be useful too

As for Egypt, yes cover up. The chances are it will be so hot you'll want to anyway. Tourists are generally safe there, but as an American you should do as little that is likely to offend as is possible. Your tour operator will certainly advise you if there are any security considerations at the time. Egyptians are very politicised, and love a good demonstration every now and again which can appear a bit chaotic but are normally good natured. Like any country there are good people and bad people, but a bit of respect for the culture goes a long way.

Covering up isn't a bad idea in most places - even in Italy and Greece shorts, skirts above the knee and uncovered shoulders are considered bad form when visiting churches, and occasionally evening dining in the more upmarket restaurants and bars.

Sounds like a great trip, be sure to post some pictures and belated congratulations to you and your wife!
