I just had a convo that lead me to post this... Help me here people... why do they give shots in the butt? ...Doesn't your arm work just as well?

Have you ever had one? What was it for?

I had a shot in the butt years ago.. and it was traumatic.. hurt like a suckah!

Perhaps the medication in the shot needs to be shot into fatty tissue and therefore the butt is the best place for that eh?

I think the shots in the butt hurt less than the ones in the arms.

Arm, butt, leg.. back.. I hate them all.

My one and only needle in the butt was pain meds before gallbladder surgery. Before that I once had to have 18 needles as a local anaesthetic.

Never had one, but have never been bad with needles... Now the soreness that can come after the needle sucks (like if you tighten muscles before getting a tetanus booster), but that is usually out of your control.

I don't mind the prick in the arm, and the feeling of the needle stuck inside is kind of unique.
    I don't like signatures.

They give the shot in the butt if they are using a "bigger" needle or need a larger muscle to shoot the stuff into. I had strep a few years ago and opted for the injection instead of the oral antibiotics. Had to drop trou and give up a cheek. Didn't hurt any more than usual.

    So suck it up!

    What nick said.
Mainly to prevent pain/damage to tissues.
He is not concerned with simple soreness, but with abscesses and cysts, severe scarring, lingering pain, injection directly into an artery, bone inflammation, andómost serious of allódamage to a major nerve, with consequent paralysis. One trouble, says Dr. Hanson in the magazine GP
    SNIP
From studying patients' sores and where they got them, Dr. Hanson is convinced that, with rare exceptions, the upper arm is not the proper place for adults' injections. The muscle bed there is not big enough, he says, and a slight slip of the needle is enough to drive it into the radial nerve, wh re it may cause paralysis of the arm.

By far the best spot for the needle, according to Dr. Hanson, is the gluteal muscle in the buttock. This, he insists, is not to be confused with the whole buttock, which
there are many medicines that MUST be injected into muscle tissue, Insulin is NOT one of them.

I asked my doctor that when he asked me to drop my trousers. He told me that the medicine's too strong to put in my arm. I had acute broncitis at the time. I thought I had a flu when it just got worse as days go by.

Shots given in that region are for meds that they want Intramuscular (a lot of pain meds among others.) for a slower release into the blood stream.
People that are scared of needles wind up making it worse on themselves by being tense. You want the injection site to be as relaxed as possible. ( Floppy, wet noodle)

I didn't even feel it when i got my flu shot. It hurt a bit later and the next day, but nothing major. (its normal to have a little soreness after a flu shot)
