Update.

Quote:
Rescue teams in China's south-west are trying to reach thousands of people who have been killed or injured in the country's most powerful earthquake for more than 30 years.

State media says nearly 10,000 people have been killed in Sichuan province alone in an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale.

Many more are trapped under the rubble of collapsed schools and factories.

China warned the death toll from this week's earthquake could soar to 50,000, while the government issued a public appeal Thursday for rescue equipment as it struggled to cope with the disaster.

The leadership of the Chinese government are technocrats. Chinese Premier Wen Jaibao is a geoengineer (rock and soil) by training. Chinese President Hu Jintao is a hydraulic engineer. So the top two are probably well suited to dealing with this sort of crisis.

The ability to move 20,000 troops with another 30,000 following inside 24 hours to deal with the crisis takes a lot of planning and infrastructure. It was already in place.

The rescue with the support of aid from around the world seems to be going in an orderly manner, considering the circumstances.

I would believe that within 3 years, Sichuan will be among the most modern parts of the world. This is the country that built the Great Wall in 10 years.
