Those honey bees can have a nasty sting; we had some hive for harvesting out here and got rid of them one night; yeah, I got popped about 20 times.
Good honey if you like it (I don't) and get over that fact that it's bee vomit |

Wow, the only thing I ever see that big are paper wasp nests! Thank god for good old MN winters ( currently -20F at night and highs of -6F...take that you wasp! )
That's a beautiful hive though..pretty neat that you could get a couple of photo's of it before they took it down. |

That's a beautiful hive though..pretty neat that you could get a couple of photo's of it before they took it down. | Actually it looks fairly normal size(from what little I know - Dunedin Daily Photo: Dunedin, Florida: What's The BUZZ? )
Whenever the hive isnt enclosed the nest can become huge because it isnt restrained by the sides. From what little I know bees prefer enclosed spaces like a florida home - 3 million bees found in Miami home - UPI.com - 3 MILLION bees !! A Normal colony has ~50,000 individual bees.
Reading the story above reminds me, different bees strains act differently. The bees in the tree might have never been discovered until they actually stung someone IF they ever stung anyone at all.
BTW: Bees poop outside / away from their colony.
