Old formica counter top help?

I've got an old Formica counter in the kitchen- I won't replace it.

Because it was a dark woodgrain, the area around the sink is turning white from the surface abrasions and wearing of the resin coating. Could I coat that with a polyurethane, or would that just make a mess?

Hmm, they talk about using oil based paint and primer on a counter top-
refer to water-based polyacrylic on a Formica table top-
but no clear coats for the "counter top"

The 2nd question:
Quote:
Formica can be coated with many paints or clear finishes as long as it is absolutely clean and is very slightly sanded... 220 grit paper would be the roughest that should be used.

Since you want to maintain the appearance but just lower the gloss, you could try a water-based polyacrylic coating. This is a durable, abrasion resistant product that should serve your purposes. Minwax is one manufacturer of this product. Apply it with a foam brush or lint-free roller... very lightly! Multiple coats are preferable to a single heavy coat. This product can also be sprayed if you have access to the proper equipment. For a small area, though, spraying is unnecessary to obtain a smooth finish.

Um, do you have your reading glasses on??

Wink

yes I did, but perhaps I got up too early today too
I read the whole thing.

The espresso is wearing off now and well, the new owners will be lucky if all the drawers are cleaned out at this point
