| Youth unfitness for military called national security worry -Quote:
"startling statistics" from the Pentagon showing that "75% of young people ages 17 to 24 are currently unable to enlist in the United States military."
SNIP
The reasons behind this are serious and, if left unaddressed, will adversely affect the future strength of our military. In the interest of national security, we must understand and deal with these problems now.

We have a guy who just started doing our helpdesk, he just got out of the Airforce less than a year ago and the guy is HUGE (And younger than me!). Every time I walk next to him the guy is scarfing down poptarts, soda, doritos, burger king, cake and other gross crap. I keep wondering if they discharged him since he has a rack bigger than most women I know. I dont think ive ever seen him eat a piece of fruit since he started there and I have to stop looking at him because I feel like im getting fat watching him eat.
I enjoy that stuff once in a while, but when you are eating that garbage morning, day and night there has to be a point where some looks at themselves and goes god I look like fat slob.
Its a shame people don't take care of themselves. |

In a study being released Thursday in Washington, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and a group of retired military officers led by former Army Gen. Wesley Clark will sound the alarm bells and call young Americans’ relative lack of overall fitness for military duty a national security threat. The group, Mission: Readiness, will release a report that draws on Pentagon data showing that 75 percent of the nation’s 17- to 24-year-olds are ineligible for service for a variety of reasons.
Put another way, only 4.7 million of the 31.2 million 17- to 24-year-olds in a 2007 survey are eligible to enlist, according to a periodic survey commissioned by the Pentagon. This group includes those who have scored in the top four categories on the Armed Forces Qualification Test, or AQFT; eligible college graduates; and qualified college students.
According to the Pentagon, the ineligible population breaks down this way:
*Medical/physical problems, 35 percent.
*Illegal drug use, 18 percent.
*Mental Category V (the lowest 10 percent of the population), 9 percent.
*Too many dependents under age 18, 6 percent.
*Criminal record, 5 percent.

People are not taught the potential hazards of junk food, mainly, except for those with a medical condition, never developed as sense of PRIDE. Stuff your mouth , to hell with how I look. It's a cancer eating away our society. And we wonder why the rip off insurance companies raise the rates.

The difference is that they are letting more people in who 10 years ago wouldn't have been able to enlist. More waivers related to physical conditions and past criminal convictions are being issued at the moment. |

The Army has also raised their standards and limited waivers. He was happy to be in Bend and not Portland though. The recruiting station in Bend continues to meet their quota, while Bend's quota continues to climb to make up to Portland's failure to meet theirs. The Army has raised the age limit . . . but they also raised the education bar accordingly to the older age.

Its a shame people don't take care of themselves. | You are correct in thinking that rendering yourself physically unfit for service will get you kicked out. The Army requires you pass regular PT tests. You become overweight in my unit and your rear is out of my Army.

The recruiting station (navy) my brother is at has stopped recruiting unless you get over 80 (for men, 60 for women) on the ASVAB. To many people trying to join.
