How much would you share?
If you won $1,000,000 in the lottery (after tax), how much of your winnings would you share with your family and friends?
By "share" I mean giving them actual money or buying them gifts.

I'd probably share about half.

I'm waiting for Binder to come along and say that he'd share "none", even if his mom was homeless and living in an alley downtown because he doesn't believe in compassion!

Depending on who needed what, I think I would give about half of whatever is left after my immediate bills(no purchases, just paying off what I owe) to my close family. Of course family members with big medical bills would come first, then savings funds for education/college for our kids.
They say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

Depends if I can use it as a tax-deductible donation.

It depends on how much was left after I took care of my needs first and what my family may need..

With $1,000,000:
Non-selfish:
Friend had a baby a few months ago and the dad isn't doing beans for the child. I'd get the heating system beefed up in her house, and other things babies require. Lets just say I'd allocate $50k.
Now: $950,000
My GF's father is having job issues with the economy, so I'd see what would be possible there. Say $20k.
Now: $930,000
My mother is unsure about retirement, and doesn't have much at the moment because it was either keep the retirement in the divorce, or keep the house, so... $50k to start.
Now: $880,000
The rest of my family is doing OK I suppose, none of them live in the same state as myself so it's hard to get a grip on them but I've heard nothing, so lets let it rest for a bit.
Now, for charity: I'd want to find a cause that meant something to me. There are too many problems on earth to pick based one based on facts, so I'd go for something that I felt was an important piece of the humanitarian puzzle. Lets figure $80,000
Now: $800,000
Past that, assuming we do not move or anything like that, it would be car repairs and much-needed home improvement, then beef up my checking account with some extra cushion before putting the rest in a savings account until interest rates perk up a bit more so I could put it in a CD or the like.

I would share as much as what is needed to help my family and friend's. I would pay off all debts and medical expenses and then invest the rest and quit my job.
I've actually had this conversation with my family after a long friend and neighbor inherited half a million dollars 2 years ago. We helped them make a decision on what to do with their money. They ended up spending almost all of it on paying off family debts. They had enough left over to retire in their current house and replace their aging Lexus with a new one.

first...I would never win the lottery. My Foundation might win, but not me. My Foundation pays me for my time and services, and allows expenses for my 5 "employees"...maybe about $10,000 usd worth.

I'll let you know when I win.

Oh, I forgot . . . I don't play the lottery.

I "MAY" think about it after I pay off my bills.taxes on it... and maybe a nice home(2-250k range) and a car/truck.
At most, I think id give their kids something... a college ride. Thats about it.

On a side note- I would finish paying off my parents home- pay for a nice fixup of the home, and light assisted living care for as long as they would need it.Last edited by jokostel; December 22nd, 2009 at 01:38 PM.

Somewhere between 25-50%. The older sister would get brand new windows to improve her heating bill, and I would pay her bills for her eye doctor as she's going blind for reasons not really understood by all the specialist she has seen, with more on the list to yet see.
The dad would get a Prius or similarly fuel efficient vehicle. The brother could use new windows, too. The Mom would get a vacation and a new home theater (she's pretty well off these days) - she would appreciate that more than home improvements, and would be my only exception to utility gifts.
Well, it wouldn't be at all hard to invest half of it into my family's well being.
I would pay off all my debt, which is less than 100k, just my house and student loans. I might buy another house, a fixer-upper or just work with someone to design a new one from scratch.
What's the big idea getting me dreaming about being debt free and my family being well off, anyway!Last edited by SiliconJon; December 23rd, 2009 at 09:22 AM.
