| FDA Advisory Panel Recommends Banning Vicodin and Percocet FDA Advisory Panel Recommends Banning Vicodin and Percocet - Chronic Pain
The reason the FDA is considering changing their recommendations is that acetaminophen overdose is currently the leading cause of liver failure in the U.S.
Having gone through kidney failure and all it's ramifications, I urge you all to read this and take heed.
Prevention is easy, do it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Acetaminophen overdose?
Give me a break. Yes, overdose, it's called don't mix it with an OTC Acetaminophen it's that simple. Oh and don't take more than the recommended amount, or for that matter don't take it unless you absolutely need it.
They should consider banning alcohol for liver failure as well at this rate.
I don't need, nor have thankfully ever needed painkillers, but I see this as more or less a bandaid on a bigger problem... pill abuse and the pill market..
They become addicting, and sad to say an old friend of mine (assuming he is still alive) became a zombie to heavier drugs, including painkillers. They are not a joke and sadly most people don't understand the basic compisition of the pill they are popping into their mouths daily.

It should be noted that APAP(Acetaminophen) blocks the oxidative metabolism of ETOH (booze).
APAP is often mixed with codeine and other opioids partly to stableize them in pill form and also because some studies have shown an interaction effect wherein APAP sensitizes nocicepters and increases the analgesic effect of opioids.
I avoided Tylenol3 and Tylenol4 in favor of Codeine sulfate 30mg and 60mg respectively.
It is high time the FDA is doing what I've told my doctors to do for decades.

PS. Check the ratios of Tylenol to hydrocodone in Vicodin and to oxycodone in Percocet and you will be surprised at how much APAP you need to ingest just get to a little Opioid.
The physiological and legal limit of Tylenol4 (325mg APAP + 60 mg codeine) is six pills a day as the liver can only convert about 350mg of codeine to morphine a day, and that assumes a fully efficient liver.
To take the maximum allowed codeine in T4 requires taking six Tylenol 325mg every day, sometimes for years in chronic pain patients.

Dangers
See also: Paracetamol toxicity
Acetaminophen causes three times as many cases of liver failure as all other drugs combined, and is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States, accounting for 39% of cases. While this generally occurs through overdosing, the window of toxicity can increase at lower than toxic doses when acetaminophen is combined with alcohol, especially in heavier drinkers, or those with compromised liver function as a result of alcohol use.

Ya'll remember a couple years ago, when the VA was feeding me Indomethycin and Hydrocodone/Oxycodone . . .
My liver seems to still be functioning properly, BUT . . . it's highly irritated and enlarged. It also shows additional damage like Cirrhosis of the Liver (even though I rarely drink). I've got an appointment with a liver specialist early in the new year. Yes, it's included in my VA claim.
Painkillers are the gift that just keeps on giving . . .

Been taking Norco (vicodin) for almost 10 years now. Last liver test was ok. I'd give anything not to take it. I'd rather smoke grass for the pain. Did wonders for me when I broke my neck in 1973.
