February 29th, 2012, 12:34 PM #2That's cool, I didn't know that.45 B.C.: Roman dictator-for-life Julius Caesar, alarmed that the calendar is growing out of whack with the seasons, adds an extra day to the month of February every four years.

I suppose this is why it's called the Julian Calendar.
Good job, friend-of-friends!

So if Julian Ceaser did this, then what does that say about the end of the world and the Mayan calendar? Wouldnt that throw the Dec 12th 2012 way off?

The Mayans anticipated this of course...

our calendar...the Gregorian calendar...calculation for a year is ((400 * 365) + 100 - 3 = 146,097) / 400 = 365.2425
The Mayan calendar is approximately 365.2420 days, which is based on solar cycles.
The approximate actual time it takes for one complete solar revolution is 365.24219.
So essentially, their calendar without a leap year is slightly more accurate that our calendar with a leap year.
So the world is still going to end on December 21st, 2012.
Sorry about that.
To be more specific, the Mayans also based their entire calendar on a 1,872,000 day cycle. So leap year or no leap year, it wouldn't matter...
