More DVD anti-piracy warnings
-
May 16th, 2012, 12:46 AM #2
I'm actually sick and tired of going through these damned warnings, why can't they just put them at the @ss end of the DVD like on VHS, I hate when I have to sit through the warnings, can't skip it, can't fast forward, can't do anything.
They rank right up there with movie trailer previews that have to play before the damn DVD title screen comes up, or before the movie starts, just put the previews in a menu listing and let the users decide whether to watch them or not (Which some actually do thankfully)i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Well here's how I look at it. It's like the damn cigarette warnings. they are there but people do it anyway. Same with DVD's and blueray. There will still be piracy and The Pirate Bay will still be very active.

Cover the box with warnings,
Cover the DVD with warnings
But I want to be able to fast forward through the dang intro crap and get to my main menu.

HOW DARE YOU!!
YOU WILL WATCH what we put on our DVDs because it is OUR CONTENT, OUR MEDIUM, and YOU AGREED to that when you bought our DVD! Besides, forcing you to sit through 10, 20, or 30
minutesseconds of warnings will definitely stop people from copying our movies, and IN FACT HAS BEEN PROVEN to cause the sales of DVDs to rise!!They say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

you know I don't mind most laws regarding DVD piracy. But this is just annoying to the honest viewer.
i find this to be like excessive gun laws. The criminals don't care and the law abiding citizen is punished. blocking pirate web sites, suing people who pirate is one thing.
How bout this on the main menu screen you put the FBI warning and in the credits. Don't halt my movie every time I watch cars two with my kid and make me wait 30 seconds.
On an equal footing with that I would like to see previews as a separate menu item.

Put the DVD in, set it to play, get up, slowly make yourself a nice banana split for dessert, sit back down, viola, no dvd warnings!
They annoy me too, but I have learned to do something else while its playing. I get something done in the process.

May 16th, 2012, 11:39 AM #8I can't wait to hear the rationalization for why this is a HomSec issue.Since Homeland Security has gained the power to do so, it has seized more than 750 sites allegedly engaged in piracy.Good job, friend-of-friends!

RAtionalization?? No, I think the actual logic goes like this:
Loss of profits = less power
Less power = danger to citizens
Danger to citizens = HS involvement.
ERGO:
Loss of profits = HS involvementThey say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

Maybe their worried that US citizens will Pirate too much stuff, and download "tainted" media filled with subliminal messaging they inserted in some how, turn us into Mindless zombies and support who ever over the US government.
Who knows, they use HS as an excuse for anything and everything these days.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Just rip the main movie and burn it to a new DVD.
Works for me.

Ripping a feature length film from a DVD takes me about 30 minutes, and that includes the time it takes to recode the movie using h.264 and putting it into either an MP4 container or an MKV container. The program I use is able to encode the movie on the fly as it is being ripped.
I store my movies on a NAS to stream to my PS3, so I don't have to burn the movie back onto another DVD. So if you want a complete time, you can estimate the time it takes to burn a full DVD and add it to the time it takes to rip. (Because if you just rip and reburn, you don't need to go through the re-encoding process)
Blu-Rays take longer. If you are just ripping and burning onto another blu-ray without re-encoding the movie, I would guess that would take anywhere from 1:30-2:30 hours, depending on the speed of your blu-ray drive. If you add in encoding time, that can added another 2-4 hours depending on the length, the complexity of the scenes, what codec you are using, and the speed of your processor. Since I don't burn a new Blu-Ray I can go from ripping my Blu-Ray to playing it on my PS3 in 3-5 hours. Actions movies and movies with a lot of film grain take the longest because of the complexity of the scenes when it comes to encoding. (They also produce the largest film size) Using the same settings, one blu-ray movie can end up being only 3GB in size while another blu-ray movie can end up being 20GB in size. The larger movie also took a lot longer to encode.Last edited by Bizkitkid2001; May 21st, 2012 at 06:35 PM.

Well lets go with the 30 minutes thing.
I am guessing it would not be worth it for me. I am not sure If I will watch my favorite movie 10 times in my remaining years. with the warning staying up for 30 seconds I would have to watch the movie 20 times to make up for the ripping and burning time. with 90% of my DVD's being likely to be watched maybe 2 times on average I am only wasting 1.5 minutes of my life on the torturous wait for the warnings to clear.

I don't do it to save time by not having to watch the copyright warnings, I do it for the convenience. Since the movie is now in a format that can be read by multiple different devices, I have to choice of watching the movie on my PS3, my laptop, my desktop, my ipad, or my Evo 3D (Great for when I am on campus between classes).
Also, I can put my movies in storage so they don't take up my bookshelf space (Small room) and a lot of the movies are actually my Aunt's (I am living with her while I go to school so I have access to her giant blu-ray collection) and she uses her PS3 to access the media server from my NAS to be able to watch her movies that I have ripped.
But, if you were wanting to find out if ripping a movie would be enough to save you time from having to watch a 30 second warning, then yes, ripping would be pointless.
