Well, that eliminates the orchid idea, Wrong part of the world for orchids to grow in the yard. It does look like a Lady Slipper, but it's to small, Hey! mayby you got a new miniature mutation!

I agree with the lady slipper. A lot of times in the wild, lady slippers will not be very large at all but hug the ground with just a short shoot with the flower(s)

Do the leaves have veins that run along the length of the leaf sort of parallel to each other instead of branching from a single stem?

    If so, then that's right.

the flower is different, but it could have growing habit's similar to a mystery lily I have. It will produce leaves in the spring that die off. Then later in the summer it send's up the flower stalk. are there more in the area? probably has a small tuber or bulb under it.

Helicopters don't fly; they vibrate so much and make so much noise that the earth rejects them.

    It's called an Indian Pipe

    Monotropa uniflora

yes I have a degree in Biology

It prefers humus and rotting trees and such. It has a fungi growing in its roots. That is how it gets its nourishment from the decaying woodland things.

(I did have to use a guide to help me out, been a few years since I took botony)
