"Clear" bra for the front of your car.

As I was perusing the auto section of the morning paper I saw an article on this stuff.xpel
It is a clear urethan film coating custom made for your car. Applied by a pro , it is designed to prevent road chips etc to your cars front, head lights and stuff. But its clear, not like one of those black things, and you can't even tell its there hardly. Kinda cool I think.

They use something similar to this on some of the newer cars, The late 80's Silerados had a piece of this stuff right in front of the back wheels to stop a chipping problem, and this 91 probe I've been working on,alo has it under the doors. I don't know if it's a factory, or dealer application though.

Hey, that isn't funny. My extremely bright artic white Firebird now has a dull faded yellow front nose clip! When the instructions say wash the paint under the cover every two weeks, they are not kidding.

Not like it really matters though, as I run a car bra full-time due to bugs in FL, but I did have to order a new cover this weekend as mine was ripped to shreds when stupidly attempting to drive my car across a pathetic speed bump. Very bad idea, as my front-end clearance is around two inches with my low profile tires/rims.

I have always wondered why people put these things on a car in the first place.

Is it to keep the paint from chipping so that when you sell the car it looks good for someone else, Which to me doesn't make any sense.....

Or is it because the people that buy them think they look cool.

Everytime I see one on a car I say to myself why would they want to put that on there.

    Just Curious...................

ewwww Rob.. sorry to hear that. Yeah I know I've seen it a few times with the bra fading paint
didn't realize that washing it every 2 weeks would help it.. I'm still thinking it wouldn't

I'd rather have a bra on my car, then have it lowered though
    Just personal preference

    Bras are for women.

Why protect the paint if you can't see it ?

I have a 3" large clear plastic line glued on the front of my hood. It really helped avoid the paint chips and is hardly noticeable. Just look in the gallery to find my car (the non-accidented one) and check out if you can see the plastic line.

    Unhappy

I had checked into X-Pel and other clear protections for the nose of my Miata too, but when I lost my job I haven't been able to recoup the expense enough to do further serious research. It's so bad now I'll just wait for a paint job

Bras are crap, imo. Unless you take thing off WEEKLY, every time you wash your car and every time it rains, you'll damage the paint. Happened to me; it left little dull scuff marks on my nose

Now I have road pitting AND scuff dull marks and I'm pretty unhappy about it, so I'll just have to paint it all when the time comes. Then I'll get the X-Pel or something similar.

Bras are good for long trips but can't be on all the time.

And skuz, haven't you ever seen the Man-Bra? You know, Kramer's invention on Seinfeld

Toadman, do you have any thoughts on X-Pel?

Funny how you protect something that you will never see

I thought 3M made those clear ones.

My brother in law has a bug deflector on his truck to prevent "chips".
Well, the bug shield ended up rubbing against the paint and wore away the paint across the entire hood.....has to get the whole thing repainted anyway.

So is the X-pel coating impervious to rock chips and bug juices? Or do you replace it annually when it starts looking like an unprotected nose? I haven't seen one up close yet, but looks like dealers are jumping on it as a new car accessory already.

Pretty sure they are "disposable" and you need to reapply them\ once in awhile.

The Xpel material I think WAS developed by 3M, as far as replacing it , it's not too clear. Or is it REPLACE it when it's not to clear?

Speedo, A friend had a nice grandam with a bra on it. Very nice looking car. He left it on all the time. We all thought it was because he thought it looked good, but it was really covering the nice spot where the owl hit @ 70 mph Never knew it with the bra on it

Sure looked bad when we pulled it off to repaint the carHe prolly drove it a year that way, and no one knew.

Actually 3M approached the developer and wanted to buy the patent, so I hear.

I read "Clear bra" and I instantly clicked, then I read the rest and was sadly disappointed.
