Another alternate fuel source: waste cooking oil

Heard this on NPR on the way home this afternoon. Some guy in N. Wales is burning recycled waste cooking oil in his diesel car. He says it burns fine, gets better milage (kilometerage?), and it is much cheaper than diesel fuel. Even new cooking oil is 50% cheaper than diesel there. And it’s replenishable. And it would put money in our farmer’s pockets rather than the Arab’s. Sounds good to me. Wonder why no one thought of this before. Only problem is the car apparently smells like a deep fryer when it’s running.

Idea has been bandied about for quite a while. Wonder what the supply of cooking oil is like... and what the cost would be when demand skyrockets were it the next wonder fuel.

Yeah I heard about this two.... in fact I think I saw a special about four women touring the US in a mini van powered by veg oil, very little waste and only a slight smell of French Fries....

Future report

The scourge of cooking oil powered cars.

Americans gain an average of 300 lbs per capita.

Ever since the introduction of cooking oil to our vehicles people have been increasing their consumption of french fries.

McDonalds has opened 55,000 french fry only shops across the nation to capitalize on the exhaust induced food frenzies.

New york is now under martial law after a terrorist blew up a potato warehouse cutting off new york from their fry fix.

Well it's been a few years that the veg oil diesel has been used, mostly in boats i think too. And it does smell like fries. I like regular diesel exhaust. Not a bad idea either, but what if Americans stop fattening themselves up? Will they be declared evil for harming the environment? It's just like smokers who quit now. They're costing the state government precious tax money by kicking the habit. Help your country, smoke a cigarette.

This was tested at the University of Georgia about 8 years ago except they used peanut oil. They used it for fuel in the UGA busses. For those who don't know, Georgia is one of the largest producers of peanuts in the world (I guess this is why they were testing peanut oil).

And no, it didn't smell like french fries. It smelled like a peanut butter sandwich driving by.

This reminds me of a program I saw on TV once where a guy over in Europe had some sort of contraption to turn sheep manure into methane gas. He claimed that methane burns at a higher percentage rate than gasoline, thereby producing more power and fuel economy. From what I've read, an automobile does not burn 100% of the gasoline put into it. Some of it remains unburned and passes through to the atmosphere, where methane burns nearly 100%.

Talk about a renewable resource!

The downside is, I would guess that it smells like neither french fries nor peanut butter.
