What Kind of gas do you use? There are so many gas stations out there and so many different people have there preference. I use shell gas for two reasons.
1 - I get airmiles
2 - I grew up with it cause that's all my dad used.
Two very un-educated and wrong reasons for using a specific gas company. I don't know anything about gas and what makes a good gas and bad gas.
How do you pick your gas company?

Basically I use the 87 octane stuff.
The one that comes from the cheapest pump because some of those gas stations which give airmiles cost so much more than the cheapest stuff that you could buy the airplane
Octane is another place where people get confused. They think that the octane is some magic super chemical which makes their car faster and stronger more efficient and pollute less.
Actually octane is simply measurement of gasses ability to be compressed with out igniting on its own (PING). Cars rated for 87 octane do not ping when using 87 octane. Cars with higher compression ratios require higher octane.
Finally I will not go to the gas stations with water in their tanks. That is bad for your car.
Seriously though I would suggest the cheapest gas or gas from a company you respect more than the others as that might give you more personal satisfaction (i.e. companies who do not purchase gas from middle east or some such if that is your beef.) |

Cheapest gas ? Is there such thing as price competition in the US ?
Here they all raise/lower prices together. |

By me I see up to a 10 cent differential. Usually more like 5 though but on occasion 10 |

I don't buy Exxon since the Valdez spill; I don't buy Gulf (not difficult to do) because of their dealings with the late Jonas Savimbi; I don't buy Shell if I can help it because of their involvement in the Ken Saro-Wiwa judicial murder in Nigeria. But if I were consistent, I'd probably have to boycott 'em all, and burn wood or something. |

epidemic, how do you know which places have water in their tanks? You'd think no one would admit to that, since we would all want to avoid it. |

So the there is no difference in the gas between the different companies? It's just a matter of your personal views or feelings on what they do outside of the gas business?
Why are so many people so pro shell, chevron, esso etc...?
Always saying "Don't buy gas from (insert company here) there gas is no good, buy from (Insert different company here), there gas is better.
Do they just like to here themselves talk. Is because there dad is better than my dad (see my reason #2)
If that's the case then I'll stick with shell because I get airmiles and I don't pay extra for it. Out here shells prices are usually at par or better than the other gas stations.
For some reason, I thought there was a difference in the gas itself... |

Petro-Canada here.
I never buy Esso or Shell for a number of reasons. Shell because of they have acted complicitly with a number of countries whose actions have violated human rights. And Esso/Exxon because they refuse to invest any money into the research of clean, renewable energy sources, while at the same time, funding propaganda against global warming and air pollution. As well, Esso's gas has the highest content of sulphur of all the major gas companies in Canada.
Esso is also known as Exxon Mobil, and Imperial Oil.
