That's my 2 dollars (I'm thinking that is 2 cents with inflation)

took some searching but I seemed to have found some of the history behind the expression "My two cents"
From what I have read it comes some think from playing poker.. but the expression predates cents.. and goes back to bits .. http://www.money.org/mtquarter.html
2 bits (spanish silver.. which was the predominant coin in America two hundred plus years ago) was equivalent to America's new quarter coming out at the time.. so actualy when we say two cents we are wrong.. considering the og expression.. but two cents seems to sound so much better..
I'll provide the link below where I got the info from.. I only could find it on a cached page throuhg google.. the message board it was on deleted the thread..
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:Wj0gNCRcd9Q: pub55.ezboard.com/fwordoriginsorgfrm1.showMessage%3FtopicID%3D498.to pic+expression+My+Two+bits&hl=en
well the link is messed up b/c there is a : and p together.. I'll put a space between them.. and if ppl want to copy and paste it into a browser and remove the space they can..

Hey KenKun
No need to excuse yourself, there are people posting from all over the world in here.
Even some of us "natives" get it wrong from time to time, like when we've had too many beers, or we have people from different English speaking countries
But the answers to your thread show what a cool place it is when so many people try to help you out
It wasn't tech specific but you learnt something, we probably all did with some of the historical background to the expression
Just my 2 yen's worth
I see your in Tokyo - do you get down to Akihabara much? |
