Policy clarification needed.
I am wondering, for those who get banned due to the war threads will they get thier title as a "30 day banned" as versas the "banned" title?Originally posted by ScottW
Bottom line though: please try to keep things civil here. I've asked the moderators to be on the lookout for anyone who repeatedly loses control of themselves in the community forum. Anyone that qualifies will get a 30 day vacation from TechIMO to cool down.
Reason im asking is so people know which ones are only temporary and which ones are permament.

I probably wouldn't come back. Talk about wearing the "Scarlet Letter!" 30 days is overkill IMO.
1st. offense: 24 hour cool down
2nd. offense: 1 week
3rd. offense: you decide.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The big hug shahani thread has a link to it.

That's why he got banned?
It appears that it is a bit ridiculous..

Near as I can tell that is what happened.
My guess is that there may have been PM's that were not in keeping with moderators vision but I can only guess.

Personally I'm getting annoyed with a lot of posts in the communtiy forums, in fact they are getting quite rediculous.
Epidemic who craps in threads and speaks his mind about how everyone in Iraq should burn in he77, Yet shahani get's banned for speaking his mind.
You get Chukiechan posting comments that really piss me off about SARS, Which is nothing to joke about, and it's in extremely bad taste to joke about anything to do with a potentially fatal disease, Have you ever had one? do you know what's it's like to live with the fact that you may not survive? Until you do then you have no right to post any comments regarding this and j/k does NOT make it allright.
Personally I'm really pissed at how this community has turned into a cess pool of thread crappers and arguments.
You get people that are pro-war, Avatars that say War is the only answer, that saddam should die, This that and the other, Personally I think you're all idiots, War is NOT the only answer, Never, There is always another way, War is the easiest answer, and a foolish one at that, how many people must die to get the guy outta power that the US put into power?
So can we please get rid of all these comments about Saddam is evil, War is good, War is bad, so on etc....
I'm really getting quite sick of this, It's childish, Do you honestly think that anything you say or do will make a difference? No it won't so why destroy friendships over it. Come one people, this is community, there is nothing wrong with a friendly debate, we've all had them, and often they are actually pretty good, But all we are doing here is beating eachother up.
I will no longer be posting anywhere on this site (except for Distributed Computing) until This war is over and people grow up.

to express them. Whether it is how many little league teams we field, where the next stop sign will be, or who in our world needs to be taken out before we do is an essential part of a free community.
Whether all or any of us agrees with an opinion of another is not as important as the right to express it. From what I've seen here, it seems that the vast majority of us have the ability to let stuff roll off our sleeves and later share the latest joke.
Going to SETI? Let me know when ET contacts you!
Gotcha!!

Bill:
I beg to differ on several points. This is our community.. (Or is it?)
As of late with the thread closings, deletions, and bannings it would certainly appear that it's not our community any more.
Shahani has openly said the same things for several months and it appears he just suddenly get's banned. Why now? Why not last week, last month?
Six months ago we got along without seeing a flame war in almost EVERY thread. To say that the war isn't the reason why we are falling apart isn't far from the truth. Before this happened we all got along with minimum flame wars.. Now it appears that every thread is a flame war.

I see your point Mike. I guess my problem is I don't really take anything that serious from anyone who is sincerely expressing an emotion.

I can understand that. Of course sometimes it's better when people express only their emotions.

April 1st, 2003, 08:02 PM #37Mike, I think you hit the nail on the head here, this isn't our community. We don't pay for the webspace, therefore it really isn't our community, and it shouldn't be. As much as his comments irritated me, I don't think Shahani was banned just for that. There were probaby more things going on that we didn't see. There are reasons I have been steering clear of the war threads and I will continue to.I beg to differ on several points. This is our community.. (Or is it?)

Detritus:
It's obvious that we don't pay for the web-space and the "logistics" of the site.
Then again what good would TechIMO be without it's members?
What if we all decided to just suddenly give up on the site? Do you think that TechIMO would survive?
I highly doubt it.
If we start irritating members, and members start irritating one another guess what? The community falls apart. (Which it already has)

April 1st, 2003, 08:27 PM #39I agree TechIMO would be nowhere without it's members, but where would the site be without mods and admin. It would be mass chaos. In my mind, ppl have been very tolerant of some of the discussions that have been going on in the community lately. Like I said, I haven't hung around there lately because of the war discussions. I like to come here to get away from the war. Mike, I respect your opinion that this place is in part ours in that it wouldn't exist without us, but there needs to be some control over what goes on. Shahani's banning on the surface seemed a little extreme, but many things probably went on that we didn't see (at least I hope).Originally posted by Mike

Just remember the site potentail liability issues. If any posted comments can be seen to potentially create a liability issue for the owner, then they may need to be dealt with promptly. And any particular members who won't follow direction on such issues may be banned.
This is Scott's house. We follow his rules, or are no longer welcome. That's the bottom line.
IMO, anyway.
Cheers
Mick
