Do you believe in fate? I just wrote a paper for English about fate, and cause and effect. I was wondering if any other people agree with me when I say, ever little thing could change the outcome of what your life will be then forth. I’m not a big believer on a predetermined future; I’d like to think that there is such a thing though. So what are your view's? |

The scientist in me would be forced to cite the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and conclude that the question is irrelevant, since it cannot be answered.
But the theologian in me would argue that we are created with free will and thus there is no such thing as fate.
But I don't understand why anyone would favor the existance of fate. |

i agree, there is no reason to favor it. but at the same time theology tends to point towards both predestination and free will. so being somewhat religeous i cannot ignore either side, for to do so would be to ignore part of my religion. it's always an interesting quetsion though |

I don't agree with predestination. I do think there are random things beyond your control that will affect your life, and the rest is based on the choices you make. Water running downhill has no free will, but is constantly affected by random irregularities. Your choice for dinner tonight is probably completely within your control. Your life lies somewhere in between. Some things you choose, some are forced upon you. If you're really lucky, you'll end up enjoying the ride.

Sometimes when I feel depressed, I'd like to read the scenario to see when it's over for me.
Checking back a few years ago, I don't see how I could have made different choices, knowing what I did then. So predestined ? Maybe, but by who or what ? |

i think CM really hit it. all of western religion beleives in predestination. in christianity there is the old saying "God has a plan for us", which means that God has planned out our lives, predestination. just another example. if you think about it this way (for christianity): to say that we have freewill first of all implies that the future is unknown (if the future were known then how could we prove we have freewill?). to say that the future is uknown implies that the future is unknown to God, as well as us. to imply that God does not know the future means that he is not omnipotent, which directly clashes with christianity as we know it. therefore if you beleive in God in the classic sense, you inherently believe in predestination. |
