Ninth Circuit Blocks California Recall Election
citing concerns about a "hurried, constitutionally infirm" process.

Disenfranchise voters? Gimme a break. I guess that means the results of every election throughout history is in question. This is just ACLU stonewalling, plain and simple. Hopefully it goes to the Supreme Court and they slap some sense into them.
-
September 15th, 2003, 02:39 PM #3So what the ACLU is basically saying is that we need to disenfranchise 100% of the voters who would like to vote on the recall as specified in the California State Constitution. The ACLU's ultimate goal of course to delay the recall until the next election. The ACLU brought suit, saying the punch-card system could disenfranchise voters in six counties, including Los Angeles, the state's largest. Those six counties include 44 percent of state voters and have heavy concentrations of minority voters.

Hopefully the Supreme Court will see this joke of an election for what it is, a blatant power grab by the Republicans. They're not satisfied with trying to steal more seats in Texas, they want California, too. This is not democracy. When a governor is elected, in this case re-elected, by popular vote, it should take more than one rich politician with an agenda to change everything.
You can't fix stupidity.

Actually it took a few million AFAIK.
Polls also would indicate that the majority of californians wish to get rid of Grey out davis.
Also do not attribute this to republicans. A rich republican may have been trying to get this done, but I would not call one motivated republican ("Republicans").
How much more democratic could you get then to recall a governer based upon poor performance by the majority of the population. Sounds like the exact example of democracy. The fact that the rallying call came from one man means little if the vast majority of the people think he is right.

I think what you say is OK, M_Six. But if the incumbent is corrupt or incompetent, there must be a recourse even if he has been re-elected.
In this case, an impeachment should be one option. And the next in line becomes Governor.
Just like if Clinton was impeached, Gore would become President.
But, you are right. The GOP is now so desperate that they will attempt to grab power. If it happened in Florida 3 years ago, it can happen anywhere.

M_Six this recall campaign was brought to the table by a grass-root public petition signed by fed-up California residents and crosses all party lines. Don't blame the GOP for happening to field candidates who share the sentiments of those of us long overdue for an overhaul and capitalizing on it. Just like marketing, give the people what they want, and the Lib Dems have little clue on how to resolve the issues, since they are used to throwing money at social programs and the account is nearly dry. Sometimes a breath of fresh air is a good thing, because Davis has done nothing to appease the tax-paying voters, but only infuriate them to the point of action with a constitutional right to petition for recall which many of us have signed. If you were a resident here, you would be appalled. If not GOP, who else would you recommend?

Horse hockey. I don't believe for a second that this didn't come from Washington. They found a state where the economic slump was particularly harsh and then laid it on thick to dump the whole mess on the governor's lap. This is a triumph of propaganda, not democracy.
You think Ah-nold is going to save the state? What happens when he doesn't? Another recall? When are the California voters going to realize that they've danced for too long and now it's time to pay the piper.
EDIT: And Toadman, I've had to bite the bullet, too. In Massachusetts I was denied a legally negotiated raise because of this economic mess. I don't like, but I learned to live with it.Last edited by M_Six; September 15th, 2003 at 02:56 PM.

Well, a petition signing in California doesn't sound like something that could be handed down from Washington. The last I remembered, they were pretty liberal out there.
A grab for power? Why? Republicans already have Washington. And if you know Arnold, you know he's not the model conservative republican.Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest;

The last time I voted was with the "punchcard." I actually had the intelligence to look at my ballot and make sure nothing was "hanging."
How disingenuous is this suit by the ACLU to claim that minority voters aren't educated enough to use a punchcard?

Isn't this the same voting equipment that voted Davis into office?

The punch cards have been found to be defective and are to be replaced. If the whole issue of voting is the will of the people.
The method of voting has PREVIOUSLY been declared as unfair. The declaration was already in place. The system encompasses 44% of the electorate of California.
How can using defective forms of voting be considered fair?RayH42450@gmail.com

Wow, that sucks for CA.
M_Six, I've been following the recall from here in NC, and I don't see it as a GOP grab. Davis seems to have truly screwed up his entire term through special intrests. Many of the candidates running are democrats, including the current forerunner (forgot his name). If this were truly a GOP power grab, it would be near-suicide for them, since Cali is mostly liberal. Would be like trying to run, oh, Davis, as governor of Texas IMO.
That would be funny.

Leave it to the ultra liberal Ninth Circut Court of Appeals in San Francisco to do something like this. Just par for the course.
Unofficial TechIMO record holder for the number of times being added and removed from beemer's ignore list.

Don't worry!
The ninth circus court of appeals has been overturned more times than a IHOP pancake!
They have been overturned more times than all of the other districts combined. The Supremes are being set up by Clinton's court to again get muddled up in vote counting.
This is the last gasp before the recall...
BTW, M_Six, California is upside down by 38 billion, has just given driver's licenses to illegal aliens, is ready to require medical insurance for all workers, including family members, illegal or not. There is another bill that may already be on the Governators desk allowing illegals to go to college and pay no tuition! Yes, residents will still pay! Davis must be counting on a lot of Mexican votes because the population is only 26% legal, and 36% illegal in California in the lastest guestimate.
Even the most liberal nut case can't dream up a scheme to come up with enough money to pay for this mess!

September 15th, 2003, 06:36 PM #18Ah, but the ACLU is a staunch supporter of civil rights, not just American/USA. Overturning the stay or not, it sets a precedence and an "I told you so" cop-out pleas. We can assume that minorities(including illegal aliens granted amnesty and now a driver's license) are qualified and given the right to vote. They are eligible for votoer registration at the DMV when they get their licenses(The Motor-Voter law). "Someone" needs those votes to stay in office, hence the delayed recall while drumming up support on the Bill Clinton/Gray Davis tour. They're playing dirty pool. Do you guys/gals see what a pandora's box this opens up, flying in the face of even the National Patriot Act regarding screening/restrictions of immigrants? How disingenuous is this suit by the ACLU to claim that minority voters aren't educated enough to use a punchcard?
-

Bottom line here is this:
January 2004 2,000,000 illegals get their driver's license. Thanks to "motor voter" that's 2,000,000 new democrat voters giving the dems around 55% of the vote in the state.
Supreme Court is not in session and the Justice Sandra Day O'Connor who I believe oversees rulings by the Ninth is out of the country.
Chalk one up for the A C L Unatics who no more believe in free speach than did Stalin.
