What is the problem with the bread mold anyway. It does not taste all that bad right?
But seriously though, bread mold is the base ingredient in penecillin does that mean that eating moldy bread has an anti-biotic effect? |

Not all bread mold is Penicillium; not all Penicillium is P. notatum; all but a few (highly selected) strains of P. notatum produce trivial amounts of penicillin, not nearly enough to help -- and some people are severely allergic to even tiny amounts of penicillin.
On balance, probably not a good idea to eat moldy bread deliberately. |

I'm allergic to penicillin
We usually have the bread delivered fresh from the bakery in the early mornings, so luckily we don't have to worry about refrigeration.
But I do prefer fresh bread, once you put it in the freezer it's just not the same anymore. |

Why is mold bad? Because it just is, there's tons of bacteria on it.
Eating moldy bread is almost as bad as licking the toilet seat of a public washroom |

Well actually mold is not an indicator of bacteria. It is an indication of mold (fungi). Depending on the variety of mold you eat it can be good or bad. Mushrooms being an example of a goood fungus. they range from toxic to yummy.
Blue cheeze is intentionally molded cheeze which is eaten.
Bread mold some varieties apparently are found to be anti-microbial in nature. However according to theo the quantities of the active ingredient extracted for penecillin are trivial.
I have also seen a show on discover health channel where a mold akin to breadmold which ate a guys face off in only 3 or 4 days. |

Wow, old thread...
We actually freeze almost every loaf of bread in the house. We tend to buy several loaves at a time when they're on sale/at the bakery outlet and then freeze them for later consumption. |

We freeze our bread after getting home from the store. We can check the freshness of the store bought bread easily enough. Look at the twist ties. Different colors for different days of the week, and labeled with the day on it too boot. That's the way to get the freshest bread available if your store does this like mine ( Cub foods ).
One thing I hate is making a sandwich for work the night before and refrigerating it...yuck! Always dry. Of course, I haven't done that in a long time, and use to use primarily white bread. I don't eat white bread anymore. The only thing its good for is balling up on a hook and catching carp. |
