Not sure how I feel about it. Being a Tennessee fan he was always a hated enemy. But he was so good at being an enemy. I'm not sure the new coach could fill those shoes. |

methinks someone was not too happy about his not being able to win this year... just a feeling... all those years, such a good record, but only one national championship... |

As a Miami Hurricane fan I did not like Steve Spurrier, but It was not because I was a Canes fan it was because I didn't like his coaching style, he was famous for running up the score, in my opionion if you have the game won, it is the sportsman like thing to do to not run up the score, put in your 2nd and 3rd string players, this not only gives them some playing time and will make them better in the long run but you show some mercy on the oposing team, I recall a game 2 years ago where Fl was playing Kentucky and they got the ball back with 20 seconds on the clock and on Kentucky's 5 yard line (the score was Fl 50, Ky 7) instead of taking a knee and running out the clock they ran a play and scored another touchdown, He was a great coach for Florida, I didn't like him but we'll see how he does in the NFL, alot of great college coaches don't do so good in the NFL. |

Well most college coaches don't go straight to head coach in the NFL. A few have done it (Jimmy Johnson with Cowboys), but if I was hiring I would make him prove his mettle as a coordinator first for a couple of season. Make him coach the offense or defense and then we will talk about a head job. the NFL is very different from the college game. |

I think he did the right thing by resigning immediately after the season, rather than say he was coming back, then bolt as soon as an NFL opportunity came along.
I'll bet he'll return to the NCAA within a few years.

In recent history there have been 4 coaches that I know of that have gone from head coach in college to head coach in the NFL, 3 of these were head coaches from the Miami Hurricanes, Jimmy Johnson, he went to Dallas and was successful, Dennis Erickson went to Seattle and was not to successful, and Miami's head coach last year Butch Davis who is now the Head Coach of Cincinatti, he didn't exactly tear em up there, the other I'm thinking about was the Guy that took Jimmy Johnsons place at Dallas, I can't think of his name but he was the Head Coach of Oklahoma before he took over for Jimmy Johnson, and I'm sure there have been more. |

You're thinking of Barry Switzer. He went down to Dallas and won the Super Bowl. The Texans still hated him because he had beaten Texas so many times when he was at OU |

Look for Spurrier to land in Tampa Bay, and look for Tampa to become what it should be...
Much of what we have come to accept in football in the past decade has always been part of Spurrier's approach (shotgun, pass-pass-pass). Give him a decent quarterback with an effective offensive line and watch the scoreboard light up. |

Being a long time Bucs fan I hope Spurrier lands in Tampa Bay. Dungy has brought the team as far as he can and will be a great coach......for another team.
I think Spurrier definitely has a contract he just can't say who yet.
Spurrier's Florida contract gave him from the day after the SEC Championship until the day after the Gators Bowl game to listen to any other coaching offers. Somebody put something on the table that he liked.
The most persistent NFL rumor of the last year has been that:
1.Tampa Bay will be sold to the Outback Steakhouse owners, who happen to be Spurriers best friends. That rumor has been around to long to ignore. Many sports journalists feel that negotations have been conducted with the Glazers.
2. Spurrier Loves the Tampa Bay area and the fans there idolize him.
3. Spurrier was quoted in late October " I'm a Florida guy, I don't want to coach outside the State of Florida."
Don't know where he will wind up but I think he will do very well very fast. |
