It looks like a canister that was used to hold those old paper rolls that played on player pianolas, or on the old hand cranked spindle players. Know what I mean?
That's what it looks like at first squint, anyhow. Anything inside it?
And holes in it anywhere?

Another thought, Brad. Maybe a canister for a wax cylinder, for the same purpose. That might explain the rubber seals - to stop it drying out or something.
Try seraching google for player pianos and see if you can find more info on these things.

Sounds like a trip to that antique road show would be in order. It could be worth a few bucks!

there was a time when records where cylindrical. that is a case for one of these. it actually may be worth some money. it would be worth much more if you had one of the records
there was a TechTV screensavers episode where a collector had one of these in his hands, and he had just got done saying how rare and expensive they are, when he breaks it in his hands. ouch.

I feel bad for the old guy. I liked his explative though.
"This is a one of a kind piece. There is no other kind like this particular one in the world. And you can see the tracks go this way. And um, it's really cool because it records much more accurately the . . . *SNAP* [sound of glass breaking] . . . Oh fff . . . s***! Oh my God, um."

heck if i know mick. i m guessing it was for holding some sort of cylinder that was a early musical "recording". but i ve googled myself into crosseyedness,so i guess i ll have to just say "hmm.."
its rather cool, anyways. i ve had it for,heck,30 years or so. a friend gave it to me in high school.
actually, hehe ,i once used it to store and transport my recreational oregeno to and from parties on the weekends when i was in trade school.

Here's another one on eBay, but the seller doesn't know what it is, either!
It looks too long and narrow for a cylindrical record. My parents have an old phonograph with approximately 200 of the cylindrical records... I'll have to measure the size next time I visit.

I think you should drop coffelady02 an email, draboo, and see if she has found out what it is.

...better tell rubyred there may be "lady" email coming back though.

Re: know what this is??
Ah. I am sorry to tell you this, Brad, but what you have there is but a commemorative, used to contain waxy chocolate disks (called "Flicks") issued around the turn of the century.Originally posted by draboo

I am more than happy to clear this up with one of my 100% fact-free historical accounts.
You see, when the Irish people began arriving on these shores (in the mid-19th century) and tried to get to the (promised jobs) on peanut farms in West Virginia, it was considered great sport to instead divert the Irishmen to the Belmont Shore of New Jersey.
The reason for this little jest has been lost to antiquity, but anyway, a whole mess of these guys wound up there, inquiring about work on these "peanut farms". These inquiries drew blank stares from the locals, who made their living by mining sorghum, in the fabled "Sorghum Mines" of Belmont Shore, N.J.
After awhile, the thought penetrated their remaining brain cells that they had been, alas, duped, and so these sanguine-faced sons of Erin began collecting cast-off brass tubes from the Schenectady, New York, Cast-Off Brass Tube Works (located in Belmont Shore, N.J.,) and began fashioning 'em into cranium-bashing instruments. The ends were capped to hold a lethal mixture of #2 birdshot, and an equal measure of dried bits of potatoes.
Hey, a man gets hungry.
Anyway, this little bit of folderol and brouhaha yielded the Belmont Wrecker, a legendary piece of equipage which, in the hands of a pissed-off Irishman, soon yeilded truthful answers as to which way West Virginia was located, (it turned out, the correct answer was...SOUTH) and our our lads made their merry way directly into another disaster, but that's another story...
I hope you have enjoyed this little "Look Forward Into History", and I'm glad to set the wreckord strate.

Maybe draboo should email the second ebayer in Sweeper's link, who sounds like he knows what he has (wonder if he does?
)
