Internet sharing ?
My main machine is a Windows XP machine with cable internet. I want to share my connection...I have a hub, and network cards installed and wired. I set-up my XP machine to share it's connection...now how do I set up my Linux box(SuSE 9.0 Pro) to use the connection?

I think I may be doing this wrong...
I am trying to configure my network settings on my Linux box...do I need to use Samba client to do this or should I be doing this somewhere else?

ok the adapter that has the cable/dsl hooked up to needs to be activated as sharing internet. then the ethernet card needs to be set to address 192.168.0.1 then that computer will work as a DHCP server for anycomputers connected on that lan. On linux you need to find a net configure tool or something and set it to use DHCP, i dont know how it works in SUSE, but my gentoo uses the file /etc/conf.d/net to configure the network, if you have it, it should have some example lines in there, but thats if you cant find a program to use to configure network settings

My Internet adapter is set to sharing...I set the IP address on the other adapter that connects to the hub...but I can not get the Linux side configured correctly...I may be too tired to really pay attention to what I am doing.
The network configurators in Linux(there seem to be a few) are all sety up for DHCP(as far as I can tell). I do not have the file you are referring to for my configuration or I would mess around with that for a while...I am not sure where SuSE puts the configuration file...I will dif around tomorrow...I am off to bed for tonight. Hopefully I will be able to figure it out tomorrow!

I would suggest getting a cable/DSL router. It takes care of a lot of headaches:
- handles internet sharing
- takes care of dhcp
- you can connect without starting another PC
- has decent firewalling
- will do NAT
lynchSeldom right,but never in doubt...

How does the router work? Do you connect your cable modem to the router then connect it to your machines from teh router?
edit: it looks that way...I am going to give that a shot.Last edited by cunokyle; May 6th, 2004 at 09:28 AM.

Well actually the router will replace the hub, you connect both computers to the router, connect the cable modem to the internet port.... turn the router on, then turn on the cable modem.... The system will get the address automatically.... and surf!!!

...if ICS is configured correctly then it works the same basic way as a router. You will not need the Samba client in either situation.

Just tell your linux box that the Default Gateway and DNS server are 192.168.0.1 and set the IP somewhere in that subnet - i.e 192.168.0.2.

Internet sharing ?
Hi first post very new to this lets go back to the very start......
My main machine is a Windows XP machine with cable internet. I want to share my connection...I have a hub, and network cards installed and wired. I set-up my XP machine to share it's connection...now how do I set up my Linux box (SuSE 9.0 Pro) to use the connection?.....................
I want to do the reverse, i want to use Suse 9 Pro as my firewall if that is possible and suitable, and can i do it by only using the GUI. Previously i had Smoothwall running, it crashed for some reason although for some reason it seemed to be CPU and Memory hungry i had 512 meg ram in it as well. I though i would have a look at SUSE. All i had to do after running the setup to connect to the internet was config the network card plug it into a hug it picked up the connection instantly. As this is my firewall box i am using ICS on the host PC at the moment that is why i want to try to use SUSE as the new firewall, but other than that my setup is exactly the same except i already have 2 other PC's shared through this connection ...Thanks for any advice...Regards..Boco
