Windows File Server

The last time I was installing RH 9, I remember seeing a 'Windows File Server' option. I'm assuming this allows Linux to create a partition that it shares with Windows machines on the network.

Correct?

Question #2. Multiple hard drives. I think I also remember that Linux handles drives much differently than windows. I can simply install Linux on a drive, then mount other drives to root thus increasing the disk space available, right? I think I understand that Linux will handle that without me specify'n what files go on what drive.

At any rate, I am going to try to install several old drives in an old PC, install Linux, and use it as a file server to backup my files to.

I think the Windoes File Server option when installing RH will load Samba and other stuff that will allow RH to read/write to NTFS partitions. Basically if you install it you can do what you want, though.

Linux will use as much disk space as you throw at it, and you can set up multiple partitions and mount/unmount them at your leisure. The more the merrier! Just make sure you format some in FAT or NTFS if you want windows PC's to use them as well. Windoze doesn't read the linux file system so good.

Have fun!

Cheers
Mick

The windows file server is samba. Has nothing to do with ntfs read/write support.
