iol anything to do with aol? usually, the hardest thing is to get a modem running, the isp doesn't have to support linux, as long as you feed the correct settings into kppp (the dialler program) however, aol do tend to block anything but their own software from connecting to their service. btw, are you on dialup, adsl or cable broadband? |

IOL is not AOL. They seem to be a part of a local phone company called Esat BT. |

Check out this kppp tutorial . It should work. Also, you might try wvdial.
SuSE uses kinternet, though, does'nt it?

no, it stands for Ireland On Line. it uses both i think. the user name is "free" and i got the number to be dialled from windows but i cant get the password. maybe i can try a password recovery program, it mightnt work though so is there another way?
im on dialup btw, they give you all the details when you get broadband |

I'm confused - you are connecting via dial-up right? Do you also have broadband?
Why do you need a password recovery program?
Can you achieve what you want under windows? If so how do you do it?
Flame me like a cheap burger, but I really don't get the "big picture". |

try signing up with a different isp. is this your own iol account? you should have an option to recover or change passwords on the iol website. |

Hmmm does this ISP requires specific software to be installed on your windows machine?
If its something like netzero you have to have their client to get onto the internet.

help with dialup to the free IOL service is available on IOL's help page on their website: the password is "free" and the userneame is "free" - depending on the dialup configuration, other network parameters may be necessary in Linux, such as a valid DNS server.
I second the idea of going over the kppp tutorial - also in SuSE 9.1 YaST may help you configure the modem and enter account information. Keep in mind that a few winmodems still do not work in linux |

thanks CMonster, i needed just the password.
no i cant get broadband, im just saying that if i could, i would have the password. i could uncover the password if i used the passsowrd recovery tool but theres a good chance it wouldnt have work as its for web pages onnly and i would have used it when i click the connect button. yes i can because they give away free cds and you just stick it in the drive and it starts up but linux wont run .exe files (at least, i dont how to do it)
so now that i have all the deatils, do i just run kconnect and then use konqueror or mozilla or whatever?
no specific software, it just configures everything for you, such as the modem and the tcp/ip connection.
you dont pick the password, its automatiically entered once you install it and it doesnt say what it is. |
