Next year I will be living with a guy who uses Linux OS. He showed me a thing where he can view the IP address that all the people on his network are viewing and consequently see what websites they're viewing.
I realise that next year, we'll be on the same network, and he'll technically be able to do the same to me. I think the programme was called Gorilla or something. I was just wondering if there was any way that I could stop him from finding out what I'm looking at with this tool? |

Would using a proxy also help? and i also like to know how he is doing this.
I think his tapping into the history logs if that makes any sense. |

The way he might be doing it is that he's using a network packet sniffer to capture the packets sent over the network.
A Firewall would not help if that is the case, since it only blocks traffic to and from your computer.
A proxy would help if the connection to the proxy is encrypted.

If you know him, why do you care if he sees what you are doing? Or ask him to not do it to you. If all else fails, beat him up...

Is there anything else i can do to prevent it?
I ask one of my friend on my msn list he said his pretty good with computers. I ask him how he is doing it and he said. Quote: |
Sounds like he's tapping into the history logs in the the browser through some sort of easy exploit or virus.
| Does that make any sense? to me it does but not clearly.
If i catch him doing it, i rather report him.

most likely he is using a hub, if he had a switch he would not be able to view all the traffic on the network.
(a hub sends all traffic to all ports, a switch only sends traffic to the port requesting the information)
so a firewall would be useless in this situation. all a firewall does is protect the machine from others accessing it. When the traffic hits the switch/hub its fair game.
As for what you can do, im not really sure if there is much you can do.
As for it being illegal, if its his network he is free to do whatever he wants with it. If this is a network for a college or something, then he needs to be reported to the network admins. Thats abuse on the network etc. |

you need to report him to the admin then, im 99.99% sure the admins wouldnt like him watching the network traffic |
